Georgia Department of Public Health in Lincolnton, GA seeks an Environmental Health Specialist I, II, or III to inspect food service establishments, pools, and on-site wastewater systems. The role supports enforcement actions and public health education within East Central Public Health District.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree (accredited four-year college) including 40 quarter hours (or 27 semester hours) in laboratory sciences such as chemistry, biology, geology, physics.
• Environmental Health Specialist II requires one year of full-time professional-level environmental health experience equivalent to Specialist I.
• Environmental Health Specialist III requires one year of experience equivalent to an EHS II.
• Preferred: Master’s degree in environmental health science or REHS/RS credentials (NEHA) or equivalent standards; Standardized Retail Food Inspection Officer.

Responsibilities

• Under limited supervision, performs environmental health inspections and recommends enforcement actions as needed.
• Investigates complaints and provides environmental health education and technical assistance to the public, regulated community and officials.
• Assists in countywide programs for compliance, monitoring, enforcement, and corrective action in line with environmental health laws, rules, and regulations.
• Interprets Local, State, and Federal environmental health laws and regulations.
• Permits and inspects food service establishments, tourist accommodations, public swimming pools, on-site wastewater systems and rabies program activities.

Under limited supervision, performs environmental health inspections for the Public Health Department and recommends enforcement actions as needed. Investigates complaints and provides environmental health education and technical assistance to the general public, regulated community and officials. Assists in the implementation of countywide programs for compliance, monitoring, enforcement, and corrective action in conjunction with environmental health laws, rules and regulations. May serve as compliance officer and liaison between Public Health agencies and facilities, municipalities, institutions, organizations and county and state agencies. Interprets Local, State, and Federal environmental health laws and regulations. Primary duties include permitting and inspection of food service establishments, tourist accommodations, public swimming pools, on-site wastewater management systems and the carrying out of the rabies control program.

All East Central Health District 6 employees are deemed essential workers in the event of an emergency. As such, you may be called on to participate in an event including but not limited to: staffing a shelter, working at a Specimen Point of Collection Site (SPOC) and/or working at a Point of Dispensing site (POD). If you are called on to participate, you are required to report to the designated site as a condition of employment, whether the emergency occurs during or outside regular work hours.

Environmental Health Specialist I:

Completion of a bachelor’s degree at an accredited four-year college or university which included the completion of 40 quarter hours (or 27 semester hours) in laboratory sciences (e.g., chemistry, biology, geology, physics, etc.).

In addition to the above qualifications, the following are

preferred:

• Completion of a major in environmental health science.
• Completion of a Masters degree. Current registration
• as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS)
• or
• Registered Sanitarian (RS) by the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA), or the recognized credentialing board of a sate or country having equivalent standards as NEHA. Currently qualified as a Standardized Retail Food Inspection Officer.

• Category 2: Active:

Involves moderate to heavy physical activity, potentially dangerous equipment operation, and/or exposure to unusual working conditions like weather extremes or chemicals. Examples include warehouse clerks, trades technicians, and mechanics.
