Qualifications

Environmental Health & Safety Specialist - Environmental Health & Safety

Description

The department of Environmental Health & Safety at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for an Environmental Health & Safety Specialist.

About the Opportunity:

The incumbent will design, develop policies, implement, and manage programs related to hazardous and non-hazardous waste on the main campus in Morgantown, all regional campus locations, including WVU farms, and any other areas operated by the University. This position includes administering institutional policies related to hazardous and non-hazardous wastes, providing program services, leadership, and decision-making options to institutional groups required to comply with these policies. The role requires managing complex programs collaboratively with stakeholders with diverse interests.

What you'll do:

  • Design, develop, implement, and manage OSHA, EPA, and WVDEP compliance programs related to hazardous materials management across campus and regional locations.
  • Administer institutional policies related to hazardous materials, including Waste Management, Emergency Preparedness, Laboratory Safety, and others.
  • Set goals and supervise graduate student employees; act in the absence of the Hazardous Material Manager as needed.
  • Provide program services, leadership, and decision-making support to institutional groups for policy compliance.
  • Monitor activities for compliance, identify deficiencies, and implement corrective measures.
  • Collaborate with administrators and staff to reduce incidents and hazards.
  • Stay current with regulatory issues related to hazardous materials.
  • Develop strategies to minimize environmental health and safety impacts on resources.
  • Network with professionals across sectors to benchmark and improve programs.
  • Communicate with regulatory agencies regarding hazardous materials activities.
  • Respond to emergencies and provide safety training to staff, faculty, students, and visitors.
  • Assist in overseeing vendor contracts and other environmental health and safety programs.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, Environmental Health and Safety, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • At least four years of professional experience in hazardous materials compliance and program management.
  • Equivalent education and experience will be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to interpret and communicate health and safety regulations effectively.
  • Leadership and coordination skills with professional staff.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Proficiency with computers and evaluation of complex issues.
  • Ability to establish rapport with regulatory agencies and work within teams.
  • Capability to manage and oversee health and safety programs.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and perform hazardous waste determinations.
  • Must pass a physical exam, including respiratory clearance, visual acuity, and ability to lift 40 pounds. Willingness to participate in medical surveillance.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in related fields and certifications such as Hazardous Materials Manager are preferred.

Requirements:

  • Valid Driver's License
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness, Operations, or Technician training (or ability to obtain within a year)
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager or equivalent preferred.
