Qualifications

Position: Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist

Department: Human Resources

Primary Objective of Position:

The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring programs to ensure a safe and compliant work environment within Electric Machinery Company. Conducts audits, inspections, identifies hazards, provides safety training, investigating incidents, and ensuring to local, state, and federal regulations. Promotes a proactive safety culture; regular engagement, communication, and engagement activities with all employees.

Major Areas of Accountability:

  • Conduct daily safety audits and inspections in the plant; identify potentially unsafe working conditions, hazardous conditions, regulatory deficiencies, and recommends corrective actions to Production Supervisors and Manager, and Human Resources Manager.
  • Advise Production Supervisors; safety concerns and implement safety initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Production Supervisors and Manager; develop and update safety protocols and procedures providing recommendations for improving safety in the plant and office.
  • Investigate workplace accidents, near-misses, and injuries to determine root causes.
  • Conduct monthly Safety Committee Meeting; discuss what went wrong and how committee can protect employees from hazards.
  • Implement corrective actions to prevent future incidents and manage detailed records.
  • Responsible for reviewing, updating safety policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Monitors, updates and maintains Safety Data Sheets (SDS); ensure SDS sheets are updated in a timely manner and readily available for all employees to view.
  • Manage waste disposal and pollution programs.
  • Coordinates emergency response plans and drills.
  • Partner with Lean Continuous Improvement Program Manager; on Sustainability Program.
  • Manage and enter OSHA data in JJKeller Management Suite and WEG Safety Portal.
  • Collaborate with Supervisors on personal protective equipment hazard assessments and recommends products that meet OSHA and ANSI standards as needed.
  • Responsible for First-aid Cabinets and AED Machines.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required. High school diploma with 2 – 3 years’ related experienced and/or training may be substituted for educational background.
  • OSHA-30 Certificate in General Industry preferred and/or obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • First aid/ CPR/AED certified and/or obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, and MNOSHA regulations.
  • Ability to conduct training and meetings.
  • Excellent analytical skills to identify and address safety concerns.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Must be able to initiate responsible action; react quickly and calmly in emergencies, and maintain composure under stressful conditions.
  • Demonstrate integrity, honesty, and professionalism with confidential information.
  • Effective conflict resolution skills to navigate stressful situations, manage relationships while accomplishing tasks.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with ability to multitask in an ever-changing workload.
  • Strong computer proficiency with the ability to utilize Microsoft Office suite, and SAP.
  • Proficient in using safety equipment and tools.
  • Must be flexible to changing work demands, able to work effectively with all levels of employees.
  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal safety regulations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work is performed in a plant environment; ability to move throughout plant and office.
  • Standing; for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping; bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
  • Walking; moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, moving throughout plant and office.
  • Ascend and descend stairs daily to reach all areas of in the plant and office.
  • Mental acuity; ability to make rational decisions through logic and deductive processes.
  • Requires the ability to routinely lift/move up to 50 lbs.
