Job summary

Shelby County Schools seeks an Environmental Health and Safety Compliance Advisor to oversee occupational health and safety across District facilities, materials, and environments in Tennessee. You will ensure OSHA, CPSC, Head Start, and DHS/TDOE compliance and maintain required documentation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management or Public Health or related field with four years of related experience required.
• Degree equivalency allows 4 years of education to count toward experience; 8 years total optional.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate compliance monitoring to ensure facility, playground, materials and equipment safety.
• Inspect facilities for OSHA, CPSC, and Head Start health and safety compliance.
• Plan and organize monitoring events and track follow-up actions.
• Prepare compliance reports for executive leadership.
• Collaborate with Head Start safety teams to meet federal requirements.
• Inspect environments to ensure cleanliness, accessibility and age-appropriate materials.
• Deliver safety trainings and update awareness materials as required.

Job description

Purpose and Scope

The Environmental Health & Safety Compliance Advisor is responsible for occupational health and safety requirements related to personnel, materials, equipment, and work environments. Ensures compliance with applicable OSHA, CPSC, OHS Health and Safety Performance Standards/Guidelines, TDOE, and DHS requirements, including required notifications and documentation. Develops and delivers safety awareness training and supports ongoing health and safety monitoring, tracking, and compliance.

Essential Job Functions

1. Responsible for coordinating compliance monitoring that ensures the standards required of the District and contracting agencies to provide maintenance, repair, safety, and security of facilities, materials, playgrounds, and equipment are being met.

2. Responsible for inspecting District facilities and playgrounds to ensure compliance with applicable OSHA requirements, CPSC guidelines, OHS Health and Safety standards, DHS regulations, and TDOE requirements.

3. Assists in planning and organizing monitoring events schedule for Environmental Health and Safety component area.

4. Coordinates, schedules and tracks the follow-up on all Health and Safety monitoring regularly.

5. Assist Education Director with preparing compliance reports for Executive Director.

6. Work in collaboration with Porter Leath Head Start compliance and safety team to meet all federal Head Start compliance.

7. Inspects facilities and playgrounds annually to ensure that all environments are clean and sanitary and all materials/equipment are age appropriate and are accessible to students.

8. Conducts and/or assists with trainings in areas that are governed by Tennessee Department of Education, Department of Human Services, and Head Start Environmental Health and safety protocols (Head Start Performance Standards), and other agencies; creating and updating safety awareness training materials for staff/employees.

9. Responsible for collecting, maintaining, and organizing reports, monitoring tools, and related documentation to ensure accurate and complete recordkeeping.

10. Attends regularly scheduled staff meetings, to provide progress reports, assess identified concerns, and recommend appropriate corrective action.

11. Responsible for creating, updating and maintaining policy and procedures for the Division of Early Childhood to comply with the current environmental health and safety protocol.

12. Serves as the liaison for Health and Safety ensuring that all correspondences are effectively communicated to appropriate stakeholders in a timely manner.

13. Serves on program self- assessment teams to determine if Head Start guidelines are being met for compliance.

14. Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Risk Management, Public Health, or a related field, plus an additional four (4) years of related experience: Or a combined total of education/experience totaling eight (8) years. (PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED)

Degree Equivalency Formula:

Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.

Master’s Degree=6 years plus required years of experience.
