ISD 622 seeks an Environmental Health & Safety Manager to develop and oversee district-wide EHS programs ensuring compliance with OSHA, EPA, and local health departments across multiple campuses.

The role balances technical expertise with strategic planning, training staff, and leading audits, incident investigations, and safety committees. Must travel between district buildings and occasionally work evenings.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health & Safety or equivalent required.
• Five years of environmental health & safety experience preferred.
• Certified safety professional (CSP), CIH, or ASP preferred.

Responsibilities

• Conduct safety, health, and environmental audits across district facilities.
• Liaise with OSHA, EPA, Fire Marshal, Health Department as needed.
• Oversee hazardous materials management and AHERA plan implementation.
• Manage IAQ investigations, radon testing, lead-in-water testing, and remediation plans.
• Serve as IAQ Coordinator and AHERA Designated Person for the district.
• Maintain SDS, OSHA 300 logs, injury reports, and compliance certificates.
• Oversee mandatory safety training (Right-to-Know/GHS, Bloodborne Pathogens, Lockout/Tagout, PPE).
• Onboard safety orientations for facilities staff and custodial personnel.
• Lead investigations into accidents and near-misses; implement corrective actions.
• Chairs the District OSHA Safety Committee and coordinates safety efforts.
• Review blueprints and construction plans for safety, ADA, and environmental compliance.
• Plan and manage health and safety construction projects (asbestos removal, fall protection).
• Assist budgeting for Long-Term Facilities Maintenance Health & Safety programs.
• Collaborate with Purchasing on safety-related procurement.
• Prepare internal and external safety communications.
• Collaborate with district stakeholders on safety initiatives.
• Occasionally present at evening School Board meetings; respond to emergencies.
• Maintain active professional memberships.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Summary

The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive environmental health and safety programs across all district buildings. This role ensures strict compliance with federal, state, and local regulations (i.e. OSHA, EPA, MDE, and local health departments) to maintain a safe and healthy learning and working environment for students, staff, and visitors. The ideal candidate will strike a balance between technical expertise, strategic planning, and hands‑on training, serving as the district's primary subject matter expert on all safety and environmental matters.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Inspections & Audits: In conjunction with EHS consultants, conducts regular safety, health, and environmental audits across all district facilities including but not limited to: science labs, playgrounds, cafeterias, and maintenance shops.
• Regulatory Liaison: Serves as the primary point of contact for external regulatory agencies (OSHA, EPA, Fire Marshal, Health Department).
• Hazardous Materials: Oversees the management, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste, chemical hygiene plans, and the district's Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) management plan.
• Air & Water Quality: Manage indoor air quality (IAQ) investigations, radon testing, lead-in-water testing, and remediation plans as required by state law.
• Local Designated Authority (LDP): Serves as the district's IAQ Coordinator and AHERA Designated Person.
• Recordkeeping: Maintain meticulous logs of safety data sheets (SDS), OSHA 300 logs, injury reports, and compliance certificates.
• Staff Training: Manages the mandatory safety training programs for district staff, including Right-to-Know/GHS, Bloodborne Pathogens, Lockout/Tagout, Ladder Safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Onboarding: Manages the safety orientations for all newly hired facilities, custodial, transportation, and nutrition services personnel.
• Accident Investigation: Lead investigations into workplace accidents, student injuries, and near‑misses; identifies root causes and implements corrective action plans to mitigate future risk.
• Safety Committees: Chairs the District OSHA Safety Committee, facilitating collaboration between administration, labor unions, and staff to address safety concerns.
• Project Review: Partners with the Facilities Planning & Construction Manager and external contractors to review blueprints and construction plans for safety, accessibility (ADA), and environmental compliance during capital improvement projects.
• Project Planning & Management: Identifies, prioritizes, plans, coordinates and manages health and safety construction related projects (i.e. asbestos removal, fall protection installations).
• Budgeting: Assists in developing and managing the annual Long‑Term Facilities Maintenance Health & Safety budget and is responsible for the upkeep of data on the MDE Health & Safety website.
• Procurement: Collaborate with the Purchasing Office on the procurement of consultant services, health and safety items, and project construction.
• Communication: Prepare internal and external departmental communications with clear and timely information to ensure transparency of safety work.
• Collaboration: Collaborate with district stakeholders on safety efforts.
• Availability: Must be available for occasional evening meetings (School Board presentations) and on‑call for after‑hours emergency responses.
• Professional Continuing Education & Networking: Maintain active membership(s) in relevant professional organization(s).
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Abilities

• In-depth knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and state‑specific safety regulations relevant to educational institutions.
• Professional, positive demeanor and the ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
• Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills, with the ability to translate complex safety regulations into clear instructions for educators, custodians, and administrative staff.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in relevant Environmental Health & Safety field or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be accepted.
• Five years of environmental health & safety experience.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to travel frequently between the district's buildings.

Preferred Qualifications

• Three years of experience working in the field of public K‑12 environmental health & safety.
• Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Associate Safety Professional (ASP).

Work Environment

ISD 622 is a community collaborative dedicated to educating and empowering all learners to excel in our changing world. As an Environmental Health & Safety Manager in our learning environment, the individual will work indoors primarily in an office setting. Requires regular movement across multiple campuses. The ability to climb ladders, enter mechanical rooms, walk roofs, and inspect tight spaces The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting (up to 40 lbs), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. There may be irregular tasks that involve possible exposure to physical hazards, including but not limited to: uneven walking surfaces, confined spaces, dust, heat, cold, heights, odors, noise, and vibrations. An incumbent in this position must follow all ISD 622 safety procedures including wearing required personal protective equipment as required in these circumstances. The job is performed under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
