Job summary

WSP USA is seeking an Environmental Engineer (Professional Engineer) to join our Earth & Environment team. The role is based primarily in Columbus, Ohio, with consideration for Cincinnati, Dayton, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Lexington and Louisville.

You will work on air, water and land resources projects delivering environmental consulting services to clients. The position emphasizes independent project management, technical reporting, and mentoring junior staff.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Environmental Engineering or equivalent.
  • 7–10 years of relevant experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within six months.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to travel to project sites.

Overview

WSP is seeking an Environmental Engineer (Professional Engineer) to join our Earth & Environment team. The role is based primarily in Columbus, Ohio, with consideration for Cincinnati, Dayton (OH), Cleveland (OH), Indianapolis (IN), Lexington and Louisville (KY). This position works on a variety of projects across air, water, and land resources, providing environmental consulting services and supporting client objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in developing processes and infrastructure related to water supply, wastewater treatment, hazardous or solid waste disposal, air emission sources, and pollution control.
  • Work to preserve environmental quality of air, water, and land resources.
  • Generate accurate and concise reports and documentation detailing field conditions.
  • Assess and provide guidance regarding short‑and long‑term risks to ecological and human health.
  • Ensure that responsibilities are executed at a quality level that meets or exceeds industry standards.
  • Apply environmental, health and safety compliance knowledge.
  • Support business development activities within the team.
Impact & Leadership
  • Collaborate closely with team members to provide strategic direction and support for existing client relationships.
  • Manage current and future projects, engaging with clients daily to establish and guide the strategic direction for project execution.
  • Independently manage and execute projects, ensuring compliance with established schedules and performing technically complex tasks.
  • Prepare technical proposals and reports, demonstrating competency across engineering, field supervision, technical expertise, and task management.
  • Motivate, train, and mentor junior staff.
  • Work approximately 80% office and 20% field on industrial, commercial, and State/Federal sites.
  • Prepare components of investigation and engineering reports: summaries, data, calculations, tables, figures, drawings, specifications.
  • Conduct technical evaluations and provide recommendations.
  • Act as primary point of contact for subcontractors, direct junior staff, organize field work, and provide guidance to specialists.
  • Assist in subcontractor procurement, oversee field activities such as drilling, soil excavation, demolitions, and remediation system installations.
  • Review contractor submittals, track payment applications, RFIs, change orders, and general construction submittals.
  • Travel to project sites as needed, including overnight travel.
Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Environmental Engineering or equivalent discipline.
  • 7–10 years of relevant experience.
  • Current Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Strong computer and writing skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to interact effectively with regulatory agencies, stakeholders, and clients.
  • Flexibility to work schedules beyond typical work schedule as required by projects.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites as necessary.
  • Excellent time management and compliance tracking skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative, attention to detail, and independence.
  • Proficiency with technical and business writing, office automation, and communication software.
  • Proficiency with discipline-specific design software and engineering tools.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to WSP health and safety policies.
  • Experience managing small to mid‑size projects, including scoping, budgeting, and resource management.
  • Capability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations of facilities and structures.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; effective communication with technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Experience mentoring junior staff while maintaining strict QA/QC procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • Experience managing small to mid‑size projects.
  • 40‑hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) with annual refresher preferred.
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.
