Job summary

The Department of Environmental Quality in Utah is seeking an Environmental Engineer III to join the Groundwater Protection Section in Salt Lake City. You will apply engineering expertise to protect groundwater resources, review designs, and issue permits while coordinating with local agencies and the public.

Qualifications

  • Must have or obtain a Utah P.E. license within 6 months of hire.
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil, Chemical, or Environmental Engineering, or similar engineering field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional work experience in designing water or wastewater facilities, or 5 years of experience providing regulatory review of the design of water or wastewater facilities.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience working in environmental regulatory programs with preference for the Clean Water Act, the Utah Water Quality Act or other regulations.
  • Strong knowledge of hydrogeology principles and applications.
  • Strong communication and project management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Review engineering calculations, plans, and technical specifications for construction and/or installation of facilities that discharge to groundwater; draft permits and ensure compliance with best available technology standards.
  • Conduct inspections during construction and draft approvals for QA/QC submissions.
  • Develop and draft groundwater discharge permits and administer existing groundwater permits.
  • Provide excellent customer service to permittees, local health departments, local government, and industry.
  • Use management systems to track and measure work progress.

Environmental Engineer III

The Department of Environmental Quality is seeking a dedicated, forward-thinking Environmental Engineer to join the Groundwater Protection Section within our Division of Water Quality. Groundwater is one of our most precious and hidden resources, and in this role, you will serve as its frontline defender. If you are a collaborative engineer who wants to apply technical expertise to ensure safe, sustainable water systems and shape the environmental health of our communities, we want you on our team.

Thisposition may be filled at any of the advertised levels listed below. Salary depends on the job level offered within the series.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review engineering calculations, plans, and technical specifications for construction and/or installation of any new facility which discharges or would probably result in a discharge into groundwater, draft construction permits, and ensure that facilities are instituting best available technology standards.
  • Conduct periodic inspections throughout construction of discharge facilities and draft approvals to use upon review of all construction quality assurance and quality control submissions.
  • Develop and draft groundwater discharge permits and administer existing groundwater discharge permits.
  • Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers, including permittees, local health departments, local government, and industry.
  • Use management systems to track and measure work progress.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Utah Professional Engineer (P.E.) License within 6 months of hire.
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Civil, Chemical, or Environmental Engineering, or similar engineering field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional work experience in designing water or wastewater facilities, or 5 years of experience providing regulatory review of the design of water or wastewater facilities.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience working in environmental regulatory programs with preference for the Clean Water Act, the Utah Water Quality Act or other federal, state or local environmental regulations.
  • Working knowledge of modern geologic and hydrogeological principles, and practices and applications employed in hydrogeology.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to inform the public of regulatory requirements, environmental risks, and planned agency actions.
  • Have the ability to use logic to analyze or identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts associated with information or data to draw conclusions.
  • Strong project management skills and an ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Understand principles, theories, and practices of environmental and physical sciences. Be able to find, gather and collect information or data; read and interpret data from scientific instruments or equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Applicants with an advanced degree may be given preference.
Job Series

The selected candidate for this position may be brought in as an Environmental Engineer I with a salary range of $26.61 - $42.22 per hour, an Environmental Engineer II with a salary range of $31.33 - $49.69 per hour, or an Environmental Engineer III with a salary range of $34.91 - $55.36 per hour.
