Job summary

Estuario, the San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership, seeks an Environmental Educator to develop and deliver environmental education and literacy activities for diverse audiences. This role will provide technical expertise in education, coordinate workshops, and manage the volunteer/citizen scientist database to support conservation goals.

The Educator will document outcomes, coordinate field and virtual sessions, and work with the Communications team to promote participation in events and programs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Education, Geography or Environmental Sciences from an accredited university.
• Experience coordinating community-based educational projects and workshops.
• Experience or familiarity with citizen science programs is preferred.

Responsibilities

Job description

The San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership (Estuario) is seeking qualified applicants for an Environmental Educator.

The Corporation for the Conservation of the San Juan Bay Estuary is a 501(c)3 non‑profit organization that operates the San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership, or Estuario. Established in 1994, we are the only tropical and non‑continental location within the National Estuary Program (NEP) under Section 320 of the Clean Water Act. The Estuario operates as a partnership to restore and conserve the waters and associated ecosystems of the San Juan Bay Estuary and its watershed as a sustainable axis of social and economic development. The partnership is a trusted regional science‑based organization, supported by engaged stakeholders. Estuario’s work is guided by a master restoration plan known as the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) for the San Juan Bay Estuary.

The Environmental Educator will develop and implement accessible environmental education and literacy activities and provide technical expertise in environmental education. Responsibilities will include developing and delivering educational offerings, workshops, and training; identifying the resources and materials needed for these activities; evaluating educational processes and outcomes; and conducting both virtual and field‑based workshops. The Environmental Educator will also coordinate workshops, manage the database of volunteers and certified citizen scientists, and coordinate the procurement of field materials and supplies. In coordination with the Public Involvement Specialist, they will be responsible for documenting and reporting on these activities and their outcomes.

Responsibilities:

• Manage certification, documentation, data input and database of participants in all Citizen Science Certification modules and provide updated metrics as requested by Estuario staff.
• Provide documentation to students for the completion of green/community hours, following each school’s requirements and maintain this documentation for internal purposes as needed.
• Support and carry out workshops/webinars and field workshops for all modules of the Citizen Science Certification modules as needed.
• Support in the development of knowledge and skills assessments for the Citizen Science Certification modules.
• Support the Education and Citizen Science Manager in consistently improving the Citizen Science Certification process and its educational content/curriculum.
• Collaborate with the Communications team to promote registration in workshops or webinars.
• Develop educational materials to share with users of the Lagoon and the general public focused on the importance of protecting and conserving the Condado Lagoon and the San Juan Bay Estuary ecosystem in general.
• Support with educational activities in representation of the Estuario to celebrate annual environmental awareness days including, but not limited to: Water Quality Day, Earth Day, World Wetlands Day, Manatee Day, World Water Day.
• Support the planning and implementation of National Estuaries Week.
• Support educational and experiential field trips, activities, or interpretive tours to different audiences (Water Community Network, users of Urban Forest Network, private and public sector, businesses, NGO’s, tourism industry, academia, Scouts, etc).
• Support the coordination of the 18th annual Puerto Rico Water Quality Monitoring Day as needed.
• Develop educational material for various audiences as needed for educational activities with the public.
• Support in carrying out the Gamaliel Pagan Christmas Bird Count
• Provide environmental education support for all activities in this work plan as needed.

Required Qualifications (Education and Experience):

• Bachelor’s degree in Education, Geography or Environmental Sciences, from an accredited university.
• Experience coordinating community‑based educational projects and conducting workshops and interpretive tours for various learning communities.
• Preferably have experience working with some of the Estuary Program monitoring and volunteer projects: Such as Water Quality, Bird Census, Microplastics, Research or Education/Interpretation Internships.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge and understanding of the Estuario and its mission
• Provide their own personal computer and transportation.
• Hold CIG Certification “Certified Interpretive Guide” of the National Association for Interpretation (NAI), preferred.
• Excellent computer skills and proficient in excel, word, power point, and social networks, as well as Canvas and Google Forms.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; in both languages, English and Spanish.
• Strong understanding of environmental issues and of PR biodiversity, estuarine ecosystems and bird identification.
• Must be a motivated self‑starter and team player.
• Must have project management skills including multi‑tasking abilities.
• Strong interpersonal and problem‑solving skills.
• Flexibility to meet changing project priorities and demands.
• Own transportation and computer.
• Available to work on weekends and evenings.
