Job summary

California Department of Toxic Substances Control is seeking an Investigator to join the Office of Criminal Investigations in Orange County. The role focuses on researching violations, compiling evidence, and presenting cases to support enforcement actions.

The investigator will use multiple databases to trace violations, collect samples, and prepare documents for judicial processes, ensuring compliance with environmental laws and protecting California’s health and environment.

Qualifications

• Bilingual Spanish preferred but not required. Must pass Spanish Fluency Examination
• Current POST peace officer desired
• Experience in digital forensics
• Previous law enforcement or investigative experiences

Responsibilities

• Investigate violations of the California Hazardous Waste Control Law by reviewing and responding to complaints, tips and other information submitted to OCI that alleges illegal Hazardous Waste Activities in the State
• Use databases such as Accurint, Envirostor, local property records, CLETS, California Secretary of State filings, California Department of Motor Vehicles records, DTSC’s HWTS, and CERS to research site(s) of violation, responsible entities/parties, background data and enforcement history
• Plan and determine best investigatory methods to gather, analyze, and present evidence for a solid legal case and obtain samples and labs testing
• Write statements of probable cause and present facts to judicial officials for warrants
• Accurately transcribe witness and suspect statements for case files
• Capture and preserve usable photographic/video evidence and assemble logs for case files
