Position Overview
The Environmental Coordinator (EC) supports the growth and success of Tribal environmental programs across the Kodiak region by coordinating technical assistance, partnerships, and resources for consortium member Tribes. This position works with Tribal IGAP staff to support work plan development, program implementation, reporting, and capacity building while coordinating communication among Tribes, agencies, and regional partners. The Coordinator serves as a representative of the intertribal consortium, strengthens collaboration, and supports the development of environmental programs that address Tribal priorities.
Key Responsibilities

- Supports and mentors Tribal IGAP staff across the Kodiak region by developing the processes and priorities to fit within the IGAP protocols, program development, grant activities, and day-to-day environmental program needs. Provides hands-on support, troubleshooting, and resources to help Tribes successfully implement their environmental priorities.
- Builds strong relationships with Tribal staff, agencies, and regional partners to improve communication and collaboration. Represents the intertribal consortium at meetings, outreach events, and conferences while helping connect Tribes with resources, training opportunities, and technical support.
- Coordinates with KANA’s consortium member tribes to support the development and implementation of environmental programs that address Tribal priorities through EPA IGAP and other funding opportunities.
- Builds and coordinates partnerships between Tribes, Village governments, and Federal, State, and regional resources to address identified needs.
- Conducts site visits to provide hands-on assistance and training to Kodiak Tribes and villages in need of environmental program support.
- Develops trusting working relationships with consortium member tribes, regional consortia, and statewide partners to enhance environmental program collaboration.
- Supports region-wide testing programs, such as those for ocean water quality, harmful algal blooms, solid waste, and air quality, and provides technical assistance.
- Builds an overall understanding of environmental issues across Alaska and how they impact tribal communities.
- Identifies key partners and collaborators to strengthen environmental programs and expand available resources.
- Explores opportunities for developing new programs that align with and support tribal environmental priorities and KANA’s broader mission.
- Coordinates data collection, analysis, and reporting to evaluate project progress and ensure project objectives are met.
- Coordinates preparation of grant narrative reports; works with program staff to ensure required reporting and documentation are completed accurately and on schedule.
- Coordinates and tracks project milestones, deliverables, and compliance requirements.
- Builds relationships and works closely with experts around Alaska and assists in identifying other potential partners for similar work.
- Develops and implements environmental education and outreach efforts.
- Identifies, plans, and executes work tasks necessary to accomplish objectives and outcomes of assigned grants & projects.
- Willingness and ability to travel to outlying villages of Kodiak to meet with Tribes, community members, Elders & youth to engage in education and outreach on topics related to project goals.
- Supports the development of required grant narrative reports and assists with ensuring all narrative and financial reporting is submitted in a timely manner.
- Strategizes ideas for future programs and services based upon identified priorities.
- Identifies, evaluates, and supports applications for additional funding for the KANA Environmental Program to enhance the lives of KANA beneficiaries through programs and projects.
- Ability to travel off-island for necessary and appropriate conferences, trainings, and workshops.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Biology, Natural Resources, or other related field preferred. Equivalent experience in environmental programs, Tribal environmental management, grant-funded projects, community engagement, or related areas may be considered.
Experience coordinating projects, working with Tribal communities and partners, supporting grant-funded programs, and managing multiple priorities independently. Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships, organize and prioritize workload, communicate effectively with diverse partners, and support the development and implementation of environmental programs.
Ability to work respectfully and effectively with Alaska Native/American Indian communities, Tribal governments, community members, agencies, and regional partners.
Work Schedule
KANA’s standard work schedule is 37.5 working hours per week, consisting of 7.5 paid working hours per day plus a one-hour unpaid lunch break (8.5 hours on site per ).
