Job summary

Taconic is seeking an Environmental Compliance Manager to ensure adherence to federal, state, and local environmental laws across North American facilities. You will coordinate hazardous materials handling, waste management, water treatment and air compliance under the Environmental Director.

The role requires a BS in a relevant field and at least five years of environmental compliance experience, with strong written and verbal communication skills and regulator engagement ability.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, environmental sciences, chemical engineering, or related discipline.
  • Five years of environmental compliance experience.
  • Excellent written, oral and computer skills; ability to work with regulatory agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Research and update on federal, state and local environmental laws and requirements (CAA, SPDES, RCRA, EPCRA, DOT).
  • Prepare and submit Tier 2 and TRI reports under SARA 312 and 313.
  • Track regulatory developments related to PFAS in products and articles.
  • Prepare documentation for SPDES, State Drinking Water, and DOT hazardous materials regulations.
  • Determine RCRA and DOT classification for waste; manage waste frequency, containers, shipping methods.
  • Procure shipping containers and ensure correct EPA/DOT labeling.
  • Coordinate periodic air, water, and waste sampling.
  • Ensure timely permit fee payments and permit renewals for air and groundwater discharge.
  • Plan and oversee NYS inactive hazardous waste remediation field activities and water treatment systems operation.
  • Interact with EPA, NYSDEC, DOT and other agencies and consultants.
  • Train staff on site environmental procedures.
  • Assist Facilities Management with environmental protection operations.

Job description

Environmental Compliance Manager

Taconic, a global leader in the manufacture of PTFE coated fiberglass fabric, belts and tapes, is seeking an Environmental Compliance Manager to assist, coordinate and perform all duties necessary to ensure compliance with all federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations related to hazardous materials, hazardous waste, air emissions, industrial wastewater treatment, water discharges, stormwater management, safe drinking water, and other environmental stewardship-related activities at North American facilities.

The Environmental Compliance Manager will assist with the following functions under the supervision and direction of the Environmental Director:

  • Research and keep updated on federal, state and local laws and requirements pertaining to the Federal Clean Air Act (CAA), State Facility Air program, State Pollution Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) program, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), NYS Superfund Program, Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA), Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know (EPCRA), and U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) laws and regulations pertaining to transportation of hazardous materials.
  • Prepare and submit Tier 2 and Toxic Release Inventory Reports under SARA 312 and 313.
  • Track pertinent US federal, State and EU legislative and regulatory developments related to PFAS content in finished products and articles.
  • Prepare and submit all documentation in compliance with mandated regulations for the State Facility Air Program, SPDES program, and State Drinking water program.
  • Prepare and submit all documentation in compliance with DOT for hazardous materials including Hazardous Waste Manifests.
  • Determine RCRA and DOT classification numbers for each waste stream.
  • Determine frequency and volume of waste, selection of shipping containers and methods of waste shipping.
  • Procure shipping containers and verify correct labels and markings as required by EPA and DOT regulations.
  • Coordinate periodic air, water, and waste sampling as required.
  • Ensure timely payment of permit fees and submission of permit renewal applications for air and groundwater discharge.
  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee implementation of field activities related to the NYS inactive hazardous waste remediation program including operation, monitoring and maintenance of private and public water supply treatment systems.
  • Interact with EPA, NYSDEC, DOT, federal, state, county and local agencies and other outside consultants as required.
  • Train new hires and existing employees on site specific environmental procedures.
  • Assist Facilities Management in the proper operation and maintenance of items related to environmental protection (i.e., plant supply water supply, wastewater processing, material recycling).

Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, Environmental Sciences, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline and five years’ environmental compliance experience. Excellent written, oral and computer skills required. Good interpersonal skills with ability to prioritize tasks based on changing work conditions. Experience working with regulatory agencies. Knowledgeable of company manufacturing processes with the ability to recommend and implement changes as necessary. Experience or training knowledge in environmental compliance, waste management, drinking water treatment, and industrial wastewater treatment. Salary range - $95,000 - $150,000 per year.
