New Castle County Laboratory seeks a qualified technician to perform comprehensive environmental tests on samples from treatment plants, sewers, and industrial discharges. The role requires strong knowledge of lab operations, equipment use, and safety procedures.
The candidate will train staff in analytical testing procedures, maintain logs and data reports, and uphold QA standards in a busy public laboratory environment.
In accordance with the Merit System Rules and Regulations, an eligible list, which will be valid for a one-year period, and which will be used to fill vacancies during that period, is being established for this classification. Applicants on the eligible list will be certified in accordance with the Merit System and appropriate union contracts.
The examination process for this posting may include an evaluation of training and experience, a written examination, a computerized exam, an oral board interview examination, a performance examination or any combination of the above in order to qualify applicants for placement on the eligible list. The eligible list will be used to fill vacancies that occur within the next year. The appropriate number of names on the eligible list as prescribed by Merit System Section 26.03.505 will be certified to the hiring department for consideration to fill the vacant position(s).
New employees are generally hired at the starting salary and may be eligible for merit increases each year upon receipt of a satisfactory performance evaluation, up to the maximum salary.

An employee in this class is responsible for the operation of a laboratory in which tests are performed to monitor environmental pollution. This technical work involves the efficient and capable performance of a wide variety of tests requiring good knowledge of laboratory operations and equipment. Work involves collection and analysis of samples from treatment plants, sewer systems, and industrial discharges. This employee works under general supervision.
Good knowledge of the fundamentals of chemistry and biology; good knowledge of laboratory practices, techniques, equipment, and terminology; ability to operate atomic absorption spectrometer and associated equipment; some knowledge of gas chromatograph/mass spectroscopy; some knowledge of the theory and operation of sewage treatment plants; ability to train and direct employees in analytical testing procedures; ability to perform physical, chemical, biological, and bacteriological tests; ability to keep logs and prepare reports on tests performed; ability to lift heavy samplers weighing up to 40 pounds; ability to communicate courteously and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
At least three (3) years of experience in laboratory work related to environmental pollution control including the use of associated equipment and completion of two (2) years of college work with appropriate courses in chemistry and related sciences; or an equivalent combination of experience, education or training directly related to the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Possession of a valid Delaware Class D driver's license or its equivalent. Must pass a Class II County physical examination and background check.
