Job summary

City of Greenville Public Works is seeking a Utility Worker I – Distribution to help install, maintain, and repair the water distribution system in outdoor conditions. The role offers hands-on training and requires working with water mains, meters, and valves under supervision.

Minimum requirements include a high school diploma or GED; a valid driver’s license is required, CDL preferred but not required. Work may include evenings or weekends and emergency callouts.

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or GED required.
• Experience: Construction, plumbing, or utilities preferred but not required.
• Licenses: Valid driver’s license; CDL preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Assists with locating, repairing, and replacing water mains, service lines, valves, hydrants, and meters.
• Help install new water services and water system connections under supervision.
• Performs flushing, valve exercising, and other preventive maintenance activities.
• Reads and records water meter data as assigned.
• Operates hand tools, power tools, and light utility equipment safely.
• Assists with traffic control at job sites to ensure a safe work environment.
• Maintains cleanliness of equipment, vehicles, and assigned work areas.
• Follows safety protocols, standard operating procedures, and City policies.
• Responds to after-hours emergencies as assigned and under supervision.
