Job summary

ARUP Laboratories, based in Salt Lake City, Utah, is seeking a Specimen Processing technician to support the central facility and University Hospital labs. The role involves handling and processing specimens, data entry, and ensuring accurate test orders as part of a structured processing team.

After completing training, you will work under supervision in a fast-paced environment, rotating through PODs and maintaining strict quality controls and patient confidentiality.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or Equivalent or better in Other or related field.
• After completion of training, must pass the Specimen Processing departmental competency exam with a score of 90% or higher.
• Laboratory experience preferred

Responsibilities

• Reads and signs the Specimen Processing Procedure Manual and Safety Manual.
• Attends Specimen Processing team and staff meetings.
• Assigned to a POD upon successful completion of Specimen Processing training.
• Immediately processes specimens as they become available.
• Enter patient demographics and process specimens/orders using the appropriate applications.
• Order all tests indicated on the requisition.
• Process all manual and electronically transmitted tests on submitted paperwork.
• Properly comments any additional information on the requisition/packing list.
• Looks for problems and orders EXCEPT TT tests as necessary.
• Handles and labels all specimens and paperwork appropriately.
• Ensures all identifiers are checked on all received specimens/paperwork and match.
• Properly documents all specimen receipt information as outlined in departmental procedures.
• Properly documents client information on specimen labels.
• Properly handles specimens requiring reroute or sharing.
• PPE and safety compliance during all processing tasks.
• Remains informed of all procedures pertaining to specimen processing.
