Job summary

City of Hopewell seeks an intermediate protective service officer to enforce laws, investigate activities, ensure public safety, collect evidence, testify in court, and maintain records. Work is performed under moderate supervision.

Starting salary is $58,334.33 with a one-time $12,000 hiring incentive. Some conditions apply after successful completion of training standards. Valid Virginia driver’s license and ability to work varied hours including emergencies are required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Valid driver’s license in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.
• Previous law enforcement/criminal justice experience is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Patrols assigned area by vehicle, on foot, or bicycle to observe for violations and disturbances.
• Responds to radio dispatches and follows up on calls and complaints.
• Directs and/or monitors traffic, provides police escort, investigates traffic accidents, and issues citations.
• Serves warrants, makes arrests, and testifies in court.
• Prepares call and complaint follow-up reports and other activity reports.
• Performs residential and commercial security checks and provides customer service to the public.
• Participates in in-service training and may assist with investigations and evidence handling.
