Salary Information
This position is represented by the BART Police Officers Association (BPOA).
$7,300.80/ Monthly (Step 20/ Base Salary - While in Academy)
$8,273.28/ Monthly (Step 21 /Base Salary - Upon Academy Completion)
$9,733.29/ Monthly (Step 1/ Base Salary - Upon FTO Completion)
Note that successful candidates will start at the base salary while in the Academy.

Department
BART Police Department is a progressive agency with a focus on fair and impartial policing, bias-based policing, crisis intervention, cultural competence training, and de-escalation training. The mission is to ensure a safe environment within our transit system, reduce crime through visible police presence, enforce laws, and work in partnership with our communities.
Under general supervision, performs a variety of peace officer duties including protection of life and property, providing information and assistance, law enforcement, criminal investigations, and crime prevention activities. Selected candidates will need to complete a CA POST-mandated Basic Police Academy, a Field Training Officer (FTO) Program, and a one-year probationary period. Post-probation, patrol shifts are assigned on seniority. Officers may work weekends, nights, and holidays.
Applicants may also be considered for other positions such as Police Admin Specialist, Fare Inspection Officer, Transit Ambassador, Revenue Protection Guard, or Community Services Officer after the selection process.
The process includes five phases: pre-screening background questionnaire, POST Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB), Physical Agility Test, Oral Panel Interview, and Investigative Background Check. The entire process may take several months. Candidates must demonstrate reliability, provide necessary documents, and pass medical, background, and polygraph examinations. Specific documents may include citizenship papers, birth certificates, transcripts, proof of military service, DMV records, insurance, marriage/divorce certificates, and POST certificates. The process adheres to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
Unsuccessful candidates can reapply for future openings; reapplication rules vary by stage of the process.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Other Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent; military or customer service experience is a plus. Must possess a valid California driver's license, meet physical requirements, obtain POST certification, remain firearm qualified, and be available for various shifts, including weekends and holidays.
Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of law enforcement terminology, dealing with diverse groups, and report writing. Ability to recall details, follow directions, analyze situations, communicate effectively, drive safely, and establish effective working relationships.
