Job summary

True North Compliance Services, Inc. seeks a Plan Review Engineer to assess construction plans for compliance with building codes, structural design standards, and municipal requirements. You will collaborate with architects, engineers, contractors, and city officials to facilitate safe project approvals.

The role requires a civil engineering-related degree and knowledge of plan checks, code interpretation, and fire-resistance requirements. Field inspections may be required on occasion.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Construction, or related field.
  • Completion of structural analysis, concrete design, steel design, timber design and earthquake engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Performs structural and architectural plan checking of projects for compliance with Building Codes and structural engineering principles.
  • Evaluate test reports; may perform structural inspections in the field for special projects.
  • Learn and apply state and local Building Standards and local codes; read and interpret structural plans; establish occupancy classifications, building exiting, and fire resistance requirements.
  • Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing; maintain effective working relationships with planning staff, contractors, developers, architects, property owners, and the public.

Job Description

The Plan Review Engineer is responsible for reviewing construction plans and related documents to ensure compliance with applicable building codes, structural design standards and engineering principles, and municipal standards. This role involves collaborating with architects, engineers, contractors, and city officials to facilitate safe and code-compliant project approvals.

Key Skills

Graduation from an accredited college with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Construction, or a related field.

Completion of structural analysis, concrete design, steel design, timber design and earthquake engineering.

Knowledge of: basic principles and practices of plan check review; methods of and materials used in building construction; some knowledge of state and local laws, codes, and regulations; design and analysis of buildings and other structures constructed or rehabilitated to resist forces induced by vertical and horizontal loads of a static and dynamic nature; scientific and mathematical principles

Responsibilities
  • Performs structural and architectural plan checking of residential, commercial, industrial, and multi-family projects of medium complexity for compliance with the Building Codes and structural engineering principles. Evaluate test reports. May occasionally perform structural inspections in the field for special projects.
  • Ability to: learn and apply the State of California’s Building Standards and local codes; read and interpret structural plans for compliance with state and local building and safety codes and ordinances; learn and establish occupancy classifications, building exiting, and fire resistance requirements; respond to requests from the general public; communicate clearly, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, planning staff, contractors, developers, architects, property owners, and the public.
