Job description

We are seeking a licensed California Professional Engineer (Structural) to join our team as a Project Engineer. This role is responsible for the technical execution and coordination of structural engineering projects across commercial, industrial, and infrastructure sectors.

The Project Engineer will support projects from design through construction administration, producing calculations, drawings, and details that meet California code requirements (CBC, ASCE 7) and project objectives. Responsibilities include coordinating with architects, contractors, and internal team members, resolving design issues, and ensuring accurate and efficient project delivery.

This position requires strong technical proficiency in structural design, attention to detail, and the ability to manage assigned tasks independently while working under the direction of a Project Manager. The role also includes reviewing work prepared by junior staff, assisting with mentoring, and contributing to the development of internal standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare structural calculations, reports, and design packages for permit and construction
  • Develop construction documents (plans, sections, and details) with clear and buildable detailing
  • Coordinate structural systems with architectural, civil, and MEP disciplines
  • Support project delivery from schematic design through construction administration
  • Review RFIs, submittals, and shop drawings for conformance with design intent
  • Perform site visits and field observations as required
  • Assist in mentoring junior engineers and reviewing technical work
Expected Technical Expertise
  • Structural analysis and design of steel, concrete, wood, and masonry systems in accordance with CBC, ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC 360, and NDS
  • Design of lateral force-resisting systems including SMF, OMF, SCBF, BRBF, shear walls, and diaphragm systems
  • Application of seismic design principles (SDC C–F), including load path development, drift control, and detailing requirements
  • Preparation of complete structural calculations packages supporting permit and construction documents
  • Development of construction documents (plans, sections, details) with clear and buildable detailing
  • Design and detailing of foundations (spread footings, mats, grade beams, piles/caissons where applicable)
  • Evaluation and design of post-installed anchors per ACI 318 Chapter 17 and ICC-ES ESR reports (adhesive and mechanical anchors)
  • Design of connections (bolted and welded) in accordance with AISC, including shear, moment, and bracing connections
  • Coordination of gravity and lateral load paths from roof to foundation, including diaphragm and collector design
  • Familiarity with existing structure evaluation and retrofit, including seismic strengthening of concrete, steel, and tilt-up systems
  • Ability to interpret and apply geotechnical reports, including bearing, settlement, and lateral soil parameters
  • Structural support design for nonstructural elements (MEP equipment, rooftop units, screen walls, canopies, miscellaneous steel)
  • Proficiency in structural analysis and modeling software (e.g., ETABS, SAP2000, RAM, SAFE, Enercalc)
  • Experience with Revit and AutoCAD for coordination and production of structural drawings
  • Understanding of construction sequencing and means/methods impacts on structural design
  • Review and response to RFIs, submittals, and shop drawings during construction administration
Core Competencies
  • Design of ground-up and retrofit projects across wood, steel, concrete, and masonry systems
  • Structural evaluation, alteration, and addition to existing buildings
  • Retaining wall and foundation system design
  • Seismic evaluation and retrofit
  • Familiarity with performance-based design principles (as applicable)
  • Experience with OSHPD/HCAI and DSA projects is a plus
  • Proficiency in Bluebeam for markups, coordination, and quantity takeoffs
  • Ability to coordinate directly with clients and project stakeholders
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (Master’s preferred)
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in California
  • 3–5 years of structural engineering experience
  • Experience supporting the delivery of structural projects through design and construction
  • Office-based with flexibility
  • Occasional travel to project sites and client meetings
