Job summary

The City of Birmingham is seeking well-qualified Municipal Court Probation Officers to implement and oversee court-ordered probation activities for adult offenders. This role manages cases, maintains contact with offenders to ensure compliance with court orders, attends hearings, and develops community resources.

Qualifications

• Driver’s license required.
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• No felony convictions or misdemeanors of moral turpitude.
• CMS certification within one year of employment.

Responsibilities

• Complete intake procedures by reviewing probationers’ background information, interviewing probationers, and assessing risk and needs to gather information about the probationer.
• Monitor probation cases through gathering information relevant to cases and communicating with associated departments/agencies to help ensure compliance with court orders.
• Performs administrative tasks such as documentation, maintaining information files, and processing paperwork to ensure files on all probationers are up-to-date and accessible for court staff.
• Performs drug testing tasks including collection, storage, and disposal of urine samples in accordance with applicable state and federal drug testing standards and departmental policies and procedures in order to detect the presence of drugs and/or alcohol and to document results.
• Develops and maintains cooperative relationships by serving as a liaison for the department to correspond with coworkers, other departments, divisions, agencies, and community resources.
• Attends court hearings to provide testimony on probation cases and to gather referrals and other pertinent information on probationers.
• Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.
