Job summary

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is seeking an Environmental Specialist I to support compliance, permitting, and technical assistance in the Central District. This entry-level environmental position emphasizes organization, time management, and collaboration with industry to improve regulatory compliance.

The role includes compliance inspections, technical assistance, and training support, with a focus on safety, documentation, and teamwork across office and field

Qualifications

• Knowledge of the terminology, principles, and analytical techniques of the physical or natural sciences.
• Ability to travel, including some overnight.
• Ability to communicate in a tactful and courteous manner both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to perform field inspections/investigations.
• Knowledge of the Department’s compliance and enforcement policies and procedures.
• Skill and proficiency in computer operations and programs.

Responsibilities

• External Compliance Assistance, Outreach, Training, and Partnership Implementation – targets regulatory noncompliance and coordinates assistance with industry.
• Internal Training, Consulting, and Organizational Improvement – supports training needs of Department staff and develops materials.
• Compliance – conducts inspections, site visits, sampling, evaluates compliance and enforces as needed.
• Permitting and Waste Cleanup – reviews permits and ensures compliance with rules.
• Technical Assistance – provides guidance on department rules and policies; conducts meetings, data management, and process improvements.
