Job summary

Butte County Sheriff-Coroner's Office is recruiting for Correctional Deputy I and II (lateral). After the recruitment closes, qualified applicants will proceed to the Physical Agility Test, Oral Interview, and Written Exams tentatively scheduled for Saturday, November 7, 2026 at 7:45 AM.

The position is Non-Exempt (hourly) and progression is based on performance and certifications. Correctional Deputies will supervise inmates, ensure security, and maintain accurate records, logs and reports.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Correctional Deputy I: experience in law enforcement support preferred.
• Correctional Deputy II: 1 year of experience at Deputy I level or completion of BSCC Core Course and Penal Code 832 course.

Responsibilities

• Maintains inmate security and monitors inmate activity.
• Processes incoming inmates, fingerprints, and releases; maintains logs.
• Interfaces with inmates to classify and assign detention areas.
• Supervises inmate work crews and provides training on rules and safety.
• Supervises inmate meals and coordinate medical/counseling appointments.
• Intervenes in emergencies and documents incidents; writes detailed reports.
