We are seeking an experienced Director of Structural Engineering to lead and grow the Engineering Department while overseeing the successful delivery of structural engineering projects. This is a senior leadership position requiring a combination of technical expertise, project management, team leadership, financial accountability, and business development.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Director of Structural Engineering to lead and grow the Engineering Department while overseeing the successful delivery of structural engineering projects. This is a senior leadership position requiring a combination of technical expertise, project management, team leadership, financial accountability, and business development.

The ideal candidate will be a Georgia-licensed Professional Engineer (PE) with 12+ years of progressive structural engineering experience and at least 5 years in an engineering leadership or management capacity. A Structural Engineer (SE) license is preferred.

In addition to leading engineering operations and project delivery, this individual will be expected to actively participate in business development, client relationship management, proposal development, and identifying opportunities to grow the firm's structural engineering practice.

  • Strong structural engineering design and analysis capabilities.
  • Proficiency with Revit modeling and production of construction documents.
  • Ability to develop plan sheets, structural details, exhibits, and technical documentation.
  • Strong understanding of structural design concepts, engineering calculations, applicable codes, and industry standards.
  • Ability to understand and effectively utilize structural analysis models and engineering software.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.
  • Excellent organization and self-task management skills, including prioritizing work and meeting project deadlines.

  • Ability to mentor and teach design concepts to less experienced engineers and staff.
  • Ability to delegate project responsibilities, review work, and provide technical guidance.
  • Ability to manage projects from concept through final construction documents, including design, calculations, coordination, QA/QC, and client communication.
  • Strong business development and client relationship-building abilities, with the ability to identify opportunities and contribute to securing new work.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Technical Leadership
  • Lead the Engineering Department and provide technical direction across structural engineering projects.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of technical processes, standards, and best practices in collaboration with the Technical Director.
  • Provide technical oversight and ensure projects meet quality, schedule, and client expectations.
  • Review engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical deliverables.
  • Ensure appropriate QA/QC procedures are followed across all projects.
  • Provide technical mentorship and professional development to engineers and design staff.
Project & Team Management
  • Provide overall leadership and accountability for successful delivery of engineering projects.
  • Lead multidisciplinary design teams and coordinate engineering activities with other disciplines.
  • Assign and delegate project tasks based on team capabilities, workload, and project requirements.
  • Monitor project schedules, deliverables, budgets, and team performance.
  • Review employee timesheets and approve submitted hours.
  • Track employee workload, utilization, and resource allocation.
  • Conduct employee performance reviews and support career development and progression.
  • Promote a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing engineering culture.
Business Development & Client Relations
  • Actively participate in business development and growth initiatives for the engineering practice.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective clients.
  • Identify new project opportunities and support strategies for expanding the firm's client base.
  • Participate in client meetings, networking events, industry functions, and business development activities.
  • Assist with developing, reviewing, and presenting project proposals and statements of qualifications.
  • Collaborate with leadership to develop pursuit strategies and win new engineering work.
  • Help strengthen long-term client relationships and identify opportunities for repeat and expanded services.
  • Represent the firm professionally with clients, industry partners, and the broader engineering community.
Financial & Operational Management
  • Monitor department performance and provide accurate reporting on project and department projections.
  • Review monthly department billings to ensure accuracy and timely submission.Monitor project profitability, utilization, workload, and resource requirements.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning for the Engineering Department.
  • Balance technical, operational, financial, and strategic priorities to ensure department success.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Master's degree in Structural Engineering or a related field is preferred.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Georgia is required.
  • Structural Engineer (SE) license is preferred.
  • 12+ years of progressive structural engineering experience.
  • 5+ years of engineering leadership, department management, or senior project management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams and managing complex design projects.
  • Proven experience participating in or leading business development and client relationship activities.
  • Experience developing proposals, supporting pursuits, and securing new engineering work is strongly preferred.
Technical Skills
  • Strong knowledge of structural engineering principles, applicable building codes, and industry standards.
  • Experience with multidisciplinary engineering projects and coordination.
  • Proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, and other structural engineering/design software.
  • Strong understanding of engineering calculations, structural analysis, design documentation, and construction drawings.
  • Strong project management, financial, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong leadership, mentoring, delegation, and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to balance technical responsibilities with department leadership and business development objectives.
