This is a unique opportunity to drive clinical, research, and educational excellence across one of the nation's leading academic health systems.

Job Description

Jefferson Health and the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center are seeking an accomplished Enterprise-Wide Director of Breast Surgery to lead and expand our integrated, multidisciplinary breast surgery program across the Jefferson Health enterprise. This role offers a unique opportunity to shape clinical excellence, research advancement, and educational innovation in one of the nation's largest and most respected academic health systems.

This position reports to the Chief of Surgical Oncology and will hold a faculty appointment within the Department of Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University. The successful candidate will collaborate with institutional leaders across Jefferson's hospitals and outpatient practices in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of a residency in General Surgery.
  • Fellowship training in Breast Surgery or Surgical Oncology.
  • Board Certification in General Surgery.
  • Eligible for medical licensure in the State of Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
  • At least 7 years of clinical experience in breast surgical oncology.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience within an academic or large health system.
  • Track record of involvement in clinical trials or translational research is strongly preferred.
  • National reputation for excellence in clinical care, research, or education in breast cancer.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Leadership:

  • Maintain an active clinical practice in breast surgery.
  • Lead standardization of surgical care for breast disease across the enterprise.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, excellence, equity, and accountability.
  • Expand access to high-quality, multidisciplinary breast care across all Jefferson sites.
  • Serve as a visible clinical leader, representing Jefferson at national and international forums.

Research & Academic Innovation:

  • Oversee and grow the clinical trials portfolio in breast surgical oncology.
  • Collaborate with medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, population science, and basic research to develop translational initiatives.
  • Support SKCCC's NCI core grant activities and develop extramurally funded research programs.
  • Promote faculty engagement in national organizations (e.g., ACS, SSO, ASBrS) and scholarly dissemination.
  • Mentor junior faculty and contribute to academic advancement across the department.

Administrative & Strategic Oversight:

  • Collaborate with Jefferson and SKCCC leadership to define program goals and drive performance metrics.
  • Ensure participation in tumor boards, quality initiatives, and clinical operations meetings.
  • Lead recruitment, faculty development, and succession planning for the breast surgery program.
  • Build and lead a breast surgery fellowship program centered at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
  • Partner with system leaders to drive philanthropy, community outreach, and DEI initiatives.

About Jefferson's Breast Health / Surgical Oncology Program:

Jefferson Health offers a comprehensive, enterprise-wide Breast Health Program providing high-quality, multidisciplinary care throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The program includes 15 breast surgeons practicing at six hospitals accredited by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) and the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), with services across 11 outpatient locations. The team is supported by seven advanced practice clinicians and seven nurse navigators, who play a critical role in patient care coordination.

Annually, nearly 2,000 new breast cancer cases are managed, with approximately 88% classified as analytical cases. Patients have access to supportive services including cardio-oncology, palliative care, oncology nutrition, physical therapy, social work, financial counseling, and genetic counseling. On-site imaging is available at multiple locations, and the program participates in the Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention and Treatment (BCCPT) Program, supporting underserved populations.

The program is distinguished by its strong clinical research infrastructure, offering a robust portfolio of clinical trials. With high enrollment volumes and collaboration across the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, it remains at the forefront of breast cancer research and care.
