Job summary

GAINSCO seeks a Data Governance Manager to establish and operate the enterprise data governance program. You will ensure data is trusted, well-defined, secure, and fit for use across underwriting, claims, operations, finance, and marketing.

You will lead governance operations, create standards, and strengthen stewardship practices while guiding master data management initiatives and responsible AI practices across the organization.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in quantitative, business, information management, or related field is required.
• Certified Data Management Professional preferred.
• 5+ years of experience in data governance, data management, data quality, or related discipline.
• Experience establishing or operating enterprise data governance programs.
• Experience in insurance/financial services industry.
• Experience developing data definitions, quality standards, stewardship practices, or governance policies.
• Experience facilitating cross-functional governance discussions without direct authority.
• Experience with MDM stewardship workflows and quality metrics.

Responsibilities

• Lead day-to-day operation of enterprise data governance program.
• Build and maintain business glossary, data definitions, data element inventory, and data quality standards.
• Establish network of data stewards and coordinate issue resolution across teams.
• Lead master data management initiatives including domain prioritization and stewardship workflows.

GAINSCO is seeking a Data Governance Manager to establish and operate our enterprise data governance program. This role ensures data is trusted, clearly defined, secure, and fit for use across Underwriting, Claims, Operations, Finance, Marketing, and other business areas. As part of the Data and Analytics team, you will manage governance operations, develop data standards, strengthen data stewardship practices, support master data management initiatives, and help enable the responsible use of data and artificial intelligence. Although this role does not have direct reports, it provides functional direction to data stewards across the organization.

What does a Data Governance Manager do?

• Lead the day-to-day operation of the enterprise data governance program, including council meetings, request intake, prioritization, policies, and performance reporting.


• Build and maintain the business glossary, data definitions, critical data element inventory, and data quality standards.


• Establish a network of data stewards and coordinate the investigation and resolution of data quality issues across business and technology teams.


• Serve as the business lead for master data management initiatives, including domain prioritization, match and merge rules, stewardship workflows, and quality metrics.


• Partner with IT, Security, Legal, and Compliance to strengthen data classification, access, retention, privacy, audit readiness, and responsible AI practices.


• Develop training, communications, metadata, and data catalog documentation that improve data literacy, adoption, and appropriate use of enterprise data.

What is required?

Education:

• Bachelor's degree in quantitative, business, information management, or related field required.

Certification:

• Certified Data Management Professional, are preferred.

Experience:

• 5+ years of experience in data governance, data management, data quality, or a related discipline.


• Experience establishing, implementing, or operating an enterprise data governance program.


• Professional experience within the insurance or financial services industry.


• Experience developing data definitions, data quality standards, stewardship practices, or governance policies.


• Experience facilitating cross-functional governance discussions and influencing stakeholders without direct authority.


• Experience supporting master data management initiatives, including stewardship workflows, data quality metrics, and match, merge, or survivorship rules.


• Experience with governance and metadata tools such as Microsoft Purview, Collibra, or Alation.


• Experience with master data management platforms such as Informatica, Profisee, or Reltio.


• Familiarity with responsible AI, data readiness, and governance considerations for analytics and AI initiatives.

Skills and Abilities:

• Strong knowledge of data governance frameworks, data quality management, metadata, and stewardship practices.


• Working knowledge of SQL and cloud data platforms such as Snowflake or Microsoft Azure, with the ability to profile data and validate quality.


• Understanding of data privacy, regulatory, and audit requirements involving customer personal and financial information.


• Strong facilitation and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build alignment across business and technology teams.


• Ability to translate technical governance concepts into clear, practical business language.


• Strong organizational, project management, and follow-through skills.


• Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to documentation quality.


• Ability to work independently, establish priorities, and move governance initiatives forward in a complex organization.
