Job description

The University of Iowa Health Care Information Systems has a great opportunity to join our team as a Database Architect! In this role, you will manage a team of Reporting Analysts and Architects engaged in the acquisition, analysis, and validation of internal and external data sets in support of the healthcare enterprise. You will align data products with University of Iowa Health Care initiatives and goals, partnering with departments to provide results for informed decision making.

  1. Organize and drive successful completion of data insight initiatives through effective collaboration with stakeholders.
  2. Own and govern the Power BI architecture and framework, ensuring scalable, secure, and high-performance reporting solutions by defining best practices for data modeling, semantic layer design, workspace management, dataset governance, and integration with enterprise data sources.
  3. Provide strategic oversight for the Power BI ecosystem, guiding development standards, security models, and deployment pipelines to support business intelligence at scale.
  4. Mentor Power BI developers across the organization, promoting knowledge sharing, and lead the creation and maintenance of training materials, documentation, and onboarding resources to drive adoption and consistent development practices.
  5. Act as a thought leader in the adoption of emerging Microsoft analytics technologies, staying ahead of platform advancements and translating innovation into practical, value-driven solutions for the business.
  6. Develop, implement, and continuously improve data product lifecycle processes to maximize team effectiveness and quality.
  7. Participate with management in the review, recommendation, and prioritization of requests for data, reports, and projects.
  8. Lead business requirements gathering and manage a centralized repository of notes, documentation, code, and content catalog.
  9. Utilize all Epic delivered content in decision tree processes to embed a consistent and standard method of analytics content into workflows.
  10. Lead the development of front-end reporting solutions, metrics, reports, dashboards, and self-service reporting tools using various reporting applications (e.g., Epic Slicer Dicer, RWB, Radar dashboards, 3rd party BI tools).
  11. Provide regular updates to leadership and key stakeholders.
  12. Maintain awareness of latest developments in key areas and bring forward opportunities for organizational benefit.
  13. Ensure data quality standards are met through quality assurance testing in QA and user acceptance testing.
  14. Ensure data security standards are upheld in line with policies, procedures, and training on data privacy and security.
  15. Establish strong relationships with key stakeholders to align business needs with technical solutions and governance.
  16. Hire, develop, and manage staff performance, ensuring compliance with UI policies and fostering professional growth.
  17. Promote a respectful and inclusive work environment adhering to university policies on equal employment opportunity and diversity.
  18. Conduct and participate in meetings with honesty and respect, maintaining team enthusiasm and focus.
  19. Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences in verbal, written, and presentation formats.

Health Care Information Systems (HCIS): Provides and supports information and communication systems that facilitate quality patient care, medical education, and research.

HCIS supports UI Health Care by delivering comprehensive support for patient care, communication, technology innovation, and research, fostering a positive environment for IT and communication staff.

  • Salary: $84,380.00 to commensurate – Paygrade 6B

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Business or Healthcare Administration, or equivalent; Master’s preferred.

Experience Requirements:

  • Exceptional communication skills for diverse audiences.
  • Effective team collaboration experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Python, R, DAX.
  • Experience with BI tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Business Objects.
  • Ability to recognize business problems and develop solutions.
