Job summary

YMCA of San Diego is seeking an Enrichment - Playground Partner (Sports Instructor) Leader in Oceanside to supervise elementary students during lunch and after school, leading high-energy sports activities while ensuring safety and positive behavior. The role works at designated school sites on a Tue-Fri, 11:00am–1:00pm schedule.

The position emphasizes program planning, age-appropriate activities, and collaboration with staff and families to support students in grades K–5.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or GED.
• Interest in working with groups of children ages 5–12 from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to lead students in multiple activity areas such as games, crafts, drama, songs, science or sports.
• Completion of Child Abuse Prevention training before working with participants.
• CPR/AED and First Aid certification from recognized providers within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Assist in planning and implementing the daily program per YMCA policy.
• Act as Elementary School Coach for the Playground Partners program.
• Plan and implement sport activities during lunch/recess for grades K–5.
• Supervise participants to ensure safety and guidance at all times.
• Maintain positive relationships with staff, students and families.
• Respond to students' individual needs and adapt activities as required.
• Be prepared for activities at the start of each shift and model appropriate behavior.
• Participate in staff meetings and contribute to program development.
• Help provide behavior guidance supporting students' development and well-being.

Overview

Enrichment - Playground Partner (Sports Instructor) Leader

The Enrichment Leader (Playground Partners) supervises and supports elementary students during lunch and aferschool, leading sports programs while ensuring the safety and well-being of students, and serves as a positive role model. The program is an anti-bullying program, where we send a YMCA staff out to a school site during their lunch time recess to facilitate age appropriate high active games (soccer, dodgeball, kickball, sharks n minnows, etc.).

Schedule:

• Joe and Mary Mottino Family YMCA - Oceanside. This position is held at a designated school site
• Tuesday - Friday, 11:00am - 1:00pm

Responsibilities

• Contribute to planning and implementation of the daily program in accordance with YMCA policies
• Serveas an Elementary School Coach for the YMCA Playground Partners program
• Plan and implement lesson plans for sports activities during lunch/recess for grades K - 5
• Actively supervise program participants, ensuring their guidance and safety at all times
• Maintain a positive and responsive relationship with staff, students and families
• Recognize and respond to needs of individual students
• Adhere to work schedule and be prepared for activities at the beginning of each shift
• Serve as role model to all students
• Actively contribute and participate in staff meetings or activities
• Provide positive behavior guidance that supports developmental, social-emotional and physical needs of all students
• Adheres to YMCA dress code and Code of Conduct and Mission Statement
• Perform daily duties that ensure space is properly maintained, organized, clean, and safe
• Ability to be flexible with change within a daily schedule
• Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act in an emergency situation
• Physical ability to lead sports, games and curriculum activities, monitor youth behavior, and perform general housekeeping responsibilities
• Other duties as assigned needs to be included to all roles

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years of age or older and possess a high school diploma/GED
• Sincere interest in and ability to work with groups of children ages 5-12 years of diverse ethnic populations
• Skill set to lead students in at least two of the following areas: recreational games, Crafts, drama, songs, science, art, team building or sports
• Completion of Child Abuse Prevention training prior to working with program participants
• CPR/AED, and First Aid Certification, must include Adult and Child/Infant, obtained within 30 days of hire and must be from one of the following certifying organizations:
  • American Red Cross
  • American Heart Association
  • American Safety & Health Institute

Pay Range

USD $18.00 - USD $20.41 /Hr.
