Job summary

Syracuse City School District is seeking an English Language Learner Language Assessor to evaluate ELL students for English proficiency using NYSITELL and to lead intake interviews with families. You will provide interpretation support and help during ENL registrations, contributing to high-quality multilingual education.

• Notifies parents/guardians of test results and language identification status of every ELL student.
• Conducts assessment of eligibility in the ENL program.
• Ensures written translation of essential information for parents during the identification, evaluation, and placement process.
• Maintains accurate, complete records as required by law and district policy.
• Assists with registration activities for newly arrived language learners.
• Coordinates parent information and orientation sessions.
• Facilitates home‑school‑community communication.
• Coordinates interpreters as needed.
• Communicates with community organizations, students, staff and parents; cooperates with others.
• Maintains and upgrades professional skills.
• Performs other job‑related duties as assigned.

Job description

The Syracuse City School District is undergoing a new phase of innovation and transformation with the goal of ensuring that all students graduate high school with the skills needed to be ready for college and career. The Syracuse City School District represents 35 schools and programs, including 6 high schools, 6 middle schools, 6 K-8 schools, 13 elementary schools, and 4 alternative education programs, serving approximately 19,000 students Pre‑K–12. Of these students, 82.3% qualify for free or reduced‑price lunch, 20.1% are served by the Office of Special Education, and 83% are students of color.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The English Language Learner Language Assessor, under supervision of the Supervising Director of the Multilingual and Cultural Education Department, will assess ELL students for proficiency in English using the New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners (NYSITELL). The Language Assessor will facilitate the initial interview with parents and students, using interpretation support as needed, and provide related orientation and information to all families during ENL intake appointments. The Language Assessor is expected to provide support throughout the registration process of newly arriving language learners.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Screens Home Language Surveys
• Administers the New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners (NYSITELL), or other initial identification assessments to assess ELL students for fluency in English and primary language; collect data and monitor ELL student growth
• Notifies parents/guardians of test results and language identification status of every ELL student as identified on Home Language Survey
• Conducts assessment of eligibility in the ENL program
• Ensures that parents/guardians receive written translation of essential information (documents provided to parents during the process of identifying, evaluating, and placing students)
• Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by the law, District policy, and administrative regulation
• Assists with registration activities of all newly arrived English language learners in compliance with federal and state requirements
• Coordinates parent information and orientation sessions
• Facilitates frequent and effective home‑school-community communication
• Coordinates interpreters as needed
• Communicates effectively with community‑based organizations, students, school personnel, and parents, and has an ability to work cooperatively with others
• Maintains and upgrades professional skills
• Performs other job‑related duties, as assigned by the Supervising Director of the Multilingual and Cultural Education Department
