The University of Michigan is seeking a Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) for the Honors Seminar series in a part-time Winter 2027 appointment. The GSI will co-teach with the primary instructor, attend classes, grade assignments, take attendance, and manage logistics, Canvas communications, and emails for each section.
Ideal candidates have prior experience facilitating discussions, as well as teaching experience or related roles such as ambassador or common reading experiences.
The Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) for the Honors Seminar series will be assigned to co-teach with the primary instructor for every Honors Seminar. You will meet with each instructor before every class. You will also be responsible for grading assignments, taking attendance, assigning make-up work, ensuring logistics and room reservations are confirmed, communicating with students in Canvas, and managing emails for each section of Honors Seminar. One to two candidates will be hired from this posting. This is a part-time appointment (50% effort) for Winter 2027.
To be considered for this position, you must be a University of Michigan graduate student in good standing, taking at least 6 credit hours in the Winter 2027 term. Previous teaching experience will also be considered.
The Engineering Honors Program manages three Honors Seminar courses - ENGR 230, 330, and 430.
ENGR 230 (Honors Seminar I) provides the foundation for participation in the Engineering Honors Program. Students explore potential Honors capstone focus areas, reflect on individual academic growth and create a plan for development in several engineering core competency areas. Students work in small groups while participating in reflective and integrative learning exercises. Students engage in open dialogue on topics relevant to the engineering discipline.
ENGR 330 (Honors Seminar II) develops interpersonal and intrapersonal qualities that are essential tools for success as an engineer. Students further their understanding of strengths, consider values in the context of ethical decisions, deepen their understanding of social identity and privilege and develop a clear personal vision and leadership philosophy.
ENGR 430 (Honors Seminar III) supports integrative learning for students in the final year of the Engineering Honors Program. Students integrate learning from previous educational experiences to develop lifelong learning skills and prepare to contribute to the fields of science and engineering. Students provide mentorship to lower-division students on the creation of a personal development plan.
