Erie Preparatory Academy is seeking a Part-Time English & ESL Teacher to teach English Language Arts for grades 9–12 and provide ESL instruction for multilingual learners in a college-preparatory environment.

The successful candidate will strengthen reading, writing, speaking, listening, and academic-language skills, while maintaining high expectations and supporting diverse student backgrounds, including international students.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in English, English Education, Secondary Education, TESOL, ESL, Linguistics, or a closely related field.
  • Experience teaching high-school English, writing, literature, ESL, or related coursework preferred.
  • Pennsylvania teaching certification, eligibility for certification, or relevant demonstrated classroom experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Teach English Language Arts courses for grades 9–12, including literature, composition, grammar, vocabulary, research, public speaking, and communication skills.
  • Teach ESL courses and/or provide targeted English-language support to multilingual learners at varying proficiency levels.
  • Develop standards-aligned lesson plans that strengthen reading comprehension, analytical thinking, written expression, grammar, and oral communication.

Job description

Erie Preparatory Academy is seeking an engaging, student-centered Part-Time English & ESL Teacher to teach English Language Arts courses for students in grades 9–12 and provide English as a Second Language instruction for multilingual learners. The successful candidate will help students strengthen their reading, writing, speaking, listening, critical-thinking, and academic-language skills in a supportive college-preparatory environment.

This role is well suited to an educator who can maintain high expectations while effectively supporting students with varied academic backgrounds and levels of English-language proficiency, including international students.

  • Teach English Language Arts courses for grades 9–12, including literature, composition, grammar, vocabulary, research, public speaking, and communication skills.
  • Teach ESL courses and/or provide targeted English-language support to multilingual learners at varying proficiency levels.
  • Develop engaging, standards-aligned lesson plans that strengthen reading comprehension, analytical thinking, written expression, grammar, and oral communication.
  • Guide students in writing organized, evidence-based essays, literary analyses, research papers, personal statements, and other academic assignments.
  • Help students develop academic English skills needed to succeed in English courses and other content-area classes.
  • Differentiate instruction, assessments, assignments, and classroom supports to meet a range of learning styles, academic readiness levels, and English-language needs.
  • Assess student learning regularly and maintain accurate grades, attendance records, progress reports, and other required academic documentation.
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback that helps students improve their writing, reading, vocabulary, grammar, participation, and overall academic performance.
  • Establish and maintain a structured, respectful, inclusive, and productive classroom environment.
  • Communicate professionally with students, parents/guardians, administrators, and colleagues regarding student progress, academic concerns, and strategies for support.
  • Collaborate with faculty and administration to support student success, graduation readiness, college preparation, and the school’s academic mission.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, parent conferences, professional-development activities, school events, and other responsibilities appropriate to a part-time faculty role.
  • Follow all school policies, student-safety procedures, confidentiality expectations, and professional standards.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, English Education, Secondary Education, TESOL, ESL, Linguistics, or a closely related field.
  • Experience teaching high-school English, writing, literature, ESL, or related coursework preferred.
  • Pennsylvania teaching certification, eligibility for certification, or relevant demonstrated classroom experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of English grammar, composition, literature, research writing, and academic communication.
  • Ability to teach and support students with varying levels of English-language proficiency.
  • Strong classroom-management, communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build positive and professional relationships with high-school students from diverse cultural, linguistic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Comfort using classroom technology, digital learning platforms, grading systems, and online instructional resources.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with international students, multilingual learners, or students new to U.S. schools.
  • TESOL, ESL, ELL, or bilingual-education training, certification, or practical experience.
  • Experience teaching college-preparatory English, academic writing, literature, and research skills.
  • Ability to support upperclassmen with college essays, academic writing, and graduation-related English requirements.
  • A collaborative, adaptable, dependable, and student-focused approach to teaching.
  • A commitment to fostering confidence, curiosity, cultural awareness, and strong communication skills among students.
Schedule and Compensation

This is a part-time faculty position serving students in grades 9–12. The schedule will be determined by assigned English and ESL course sections and may include instructional planning, grading, student support, faculty meetings, parent communication, and occasional school events.

Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications, credentials, and relevant teaching experience.
