Job Description:

The goal of all English Teachers at Holy Child is to guide their students in reading, writing, and thinking that leads to critical insight, self-awareness, and a connection with the world. English Teachers develop caring relationships with students and encourage them to develop their own opinions, support those opinions with relevant evidence, and express themselves confidently in writing and orally. They present a student-centered, interdisciplinary, authentic, and well-rounded academic program.

Primary Responsibilities:

Pedagogical Responsibilities
  • Provide an authentic educational experience to prepare students for post-secondary education and beyond.
  • Create differentiated lessons to support diverse learning needs.
  • Establish a classroom environment where all students feel safe and comfortable expressing ideas and seeking help.
  • Integrate technology and instruct students in skills relevant for college and careers.
  • Use student-centered pedagogical practices such as visible thinking strategies, Project-Based Learning, Inquiry-Based Learning, and Socratic seminars.
  • Foster critical thinking and evidence-based decision-making skills.
  • Be available during free and planning periods to support individual student needs.
  • Continuously evaluate student performance and provide timely feedback.
  • Maintain accurate records of assessments and assignments in the online system.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop interdisciplinary lessons and assessments.
  • Stay current with educational developments and participate in professional development opportunities.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

  • Communicate proactively with students, parents, faculty, and administration.
  • Maintain daily attendance records.
  • Uphold school policies as outlined in the student/parent handbook.
  • Participate in monthly department meetings and contribute ideas.
  • Serve as an advisor and faculty mentor to students.
  • Display exemplary attendance and teamwork.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Division Head.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • B.A. in English or English Literature; M.A. or M.Ed. is a plus.
  • Previous experience as an English teacher.
  • Commitment to the school's mission and values.
  • Knowledge of effective teaching methods and English professional standards.
  • Strong commitment to implementing Common Core standards.
