Job summary

Job description

SR1 College Preparatory and STEM Academy is Mississippi's first STEM-focused public charter school and a tuition-free, mission-driven institution dedicated to delivering high-quality, student-centered education to scholars in Canton, Mississippi. SR1 CPSA prepares students for college and professional success through rigorous academics, hands-on STEM learning, and a supportive school community rooted in service and leadership. Position Summary

We cannot build globally aware scholars without globally aware educators. SR1 CPSA is seeking a passionate, globally-minded, and Mississippi-certified ESL (English as a Second Language) Teacher who treats language instruction as a window onto the wider world. This teacher will provide targeted support to English Language Learners (ELLs) while helping every scholar — English learner and native speaker alike — build the cultural curiosity, empathy, and global perspective they need to thrive well beyond Canton, Mississippi. The ESL Teacher will collaborate closely with classroom teachers, administration, and families to assess student proficiency, develop differentiated instruction, and ensure ELL students access the full curriculum. This position requires a candidate who thrives in a high-expectations, mission-driven environment, brings an international or cross-cultural lens to daily instruction, and is committed to the academic and social success of every scholar.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, deliver, and differentiate ESL instruction aligned to Mississippi Academic Standards and English Language Development Standards.
  • Provide both pull-out and push-in ESL services to ELL students across grade levels K–4.
  • Integrate STEM-aligned language learning activities consistent with SR1 CPSA’s academic philosophy.
  • Develop and implement individualized language learning plans (LLPs) for each ELL student.
  • Utilize research-based, culturally responsive instructional strategies to support language acquisition.
  • Adapt classroom materials and assessments to meet ELL proficiency levels across listening, speaking, reading, and writing domains.
Global Perspective & Cultural Competency
  • Weave global perspectives, current events, and cross-cultural themes into ESL and classroom instruction so language learning doubles as a window onto the wider world.
  • Connect language and STEM content to geography, culture, and global issues, helping scholars see themselves as members of a global community.
  • Model curiosity about and respect for diverse cultures and worldviews for scholars, colleagues, and families.
Assessment & Data
  • Administer required ELL and school assessments including to identify, place, and monitor student progress.
  • Maintain accurate records of ELL student data, proficiency levels, and growth in compliance with Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) requirements.
  • Analyze student data to drive instructional decisions and report progress to administration and families.
  • Participate in SR1 CPSA’s data review cycles and contribute ELL-specific insights to school-wide planning.
  • Co-teach and collaborate with classroom teachers to embed language supports into core content instruction.
  • Serve as a resource and coach to general education teachers on ELL best practices and differentiation strategies.
  • Communicate student progress with families in a clear, accessible, and culturally sensitive manner.
  • Participate in school-wide professional development, team meetings, and academic planning sessions.
  • Partner with administration to ensure legal and regulatory compliance with ELL services under MDE guidelines.
Family & Community Engagement
  • Build strong relationships with ELL families to foster engagement and support for student learning at home.
  • Connect ELL families to school resources, community organizations, and school events.
  • Assist in the translation and interpretation of communications for non-English-speaking families when possible
Qualifications

Required

  • Valid Mississippi Educator License with ESL endorsement OR eligible for certification through alternative route.
  • Bilingual or multilingual proficiency required (Spanish); genuine passion for global cultures, languages, and perspectives.
  • Knowledge of or willing to learn ELL compliance requirements.
  • Strong classroom management skills and commitment to a structured, high-expectations learning environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse learners and multicultural families.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues in a team-oriented school culture.
  • Ability and desire to weave global awareness and an international perspective into everyday instruction.
Preferred
  • Experience or willing to learn ESL at the elementary level (K–5 preferred).
  • Experience or willing to learn with STEM-integrated or project-based learning environments.
  • Familiarity with data-driven instruction and student growth models.
Work Environment & Expectations
  • Full-time, in-person position at SR1 CPSA’s campus in Canton, Mississippi.
  • School year position following the SR1 CPSA Academic Calendar.
  • Participate in all required professional development, planning days, and school events.
