Location: Wachusett Regional School District

Pay: $35 per hour

Reports To: Director of Multilingual Education & Building Principal

Terms of employment: School Year (10 Months) | 30 Hours/Week

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Multilingual Learner / English Language Tutor plays a pivotal role in providing targeted language support and academic scaffolding to English Learners (ELs) / Multilingual Learners across core academic areas. Working under the direct supervision of the Director of English Learner Education, and guidance of a licensed English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher, the Tutor delivers small-group and individual instructional interventions designed to accelerate English language proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing while ensuring meaningful access to grade-level content.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Direct Instructional Support

• Provide explicit, small-group and one-on-one language support to Multilingual Learners in push-in (classroom) and pull-out settings as determined by student proficiency levels and service delivery plans.
• Implement Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) strategies, visual supports, graphic organizers, and sentence frames to scaffold grade-level curriculum in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies.
• Assist students in developing digital literacy, study skills, and independent classroom navigation strategies.

2. Collaboration & Classroom Integration

• Collaborate regularly with licensed ESL Teachers and General Education Content Teachers to align tutoring activities with classroom core instruction and unit goals.
• Pre-teach key academic vocabulary and concepts prior to core content delivery, and re-teach complex concepts as needed following general education instruction.
• Scaffold instructional materials, reading passages, and assignments under the direction of certified staff to match students' WIDA language proficiency levels.

3. Data Tracking & Operational Support

• Monitor student progress on language acquisition goals and share qualitative/quantitative feedback with ESL teacher to inform instruction.
• Support department communication efforts with families, ensuring a welcoming, culturally responsive, and inclusive school environment.

4. Professional Conduct & Continuous Growth

• Participate in district-provided professional development
• Maintain strict confidentiality regarding student records and special education/EL status in compliance with FERPA and district policy.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director of Multilingual Education or Building Principal.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Education & Certification

• Required: Associate’s Degree, 48 college credits, or passing score on the ParaPro Assessment (High School Diploma/GED required).
• Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Applied Linguistics, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), or a related field.
• Preferred: Massachusetts DESE ESL/EPL Certification or SEI (Sheltered English Immersion) Endorsement.
• Preferred: Fluency in a secondary language reflective of the district's student population (e.g., Portuguese, Spanish, Arabic) is highly desirable, though not strictly required.

Experience & Competencies

• Minimum of 1–2 years of experience working with K–12 students in an educational setting, with demonstrated experience supporting second language acquisition or literacy intervention.
• Familiarity sheltered instruction methodologies and culturally responsive teaching practices.
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to collaborate effectively with teachers, administrative staff, and diverse student populations.
• Demonstrated patience, empathy, adaptability, and strong organizational/time-management skills in a dynamic school environment.

PHYSICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

• Ability to move around classrooms, escort elementary/secondary students between instructional areas, and engage in active classroom supervision.
• Ability to operate standard office/educational technology (laptops, iPads, interactive displays, Google Workspace).
