Position: English Language Development/English as a Second Language Teacher

FLSA Status: Exempt – Upper Moreland Education Association
Schedule: Full Time, 7.5 hours/day
Salary Range: $57,050 - $114,520 Annually

MISSION STATEMENT:

SUMMARY:

The English Language Development/English as a Second Language Teacher (K-12) plans, organizes and implements an appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. Work is performed under the supervision of the principal.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Creates a classroom and/or instructional environment that is attractive, safe, supportive, and conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity, interest, and abilities of students.
  2. Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
  3. Teaches District approved curriculum.
  4. Serves as the teacher of record or provides instructional assistance with language arts or with the academic language needed in all areas of student instruction.
  5. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of established District curriculum goals and establishes and communicates clear objectives to the students for all lessons, units, and projects.
  6. Provides a focus of language acquisition for instruction in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening.
  7. Strives by instruction and action to employ the District’s philosophy of education, instructional goals and objectives, and performance expectations.
  8. Prepares for classes and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
  9. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and employs a variety of instructional techniques and teaching strategies to meet different aptitudes, interests and abilities of students, including current technology and whole-group/small-group learning.
  10. Translates lesson plans into developmentally appropriate learning experiences to best utilize the available time for instruction.
  11. Designs activities to engage students in cognitively challenging work aligned to standards.
  12. Manages allotted learning time to maximize student achievement.
  13. Instructs, demonstrates, and uses technology to present subject matter to class.
  14. Prepares, administers, and corrects tests, and records results.
  15. Uses resources that will promote high levels of learning and student engagement in the classroom environment.
  16. Reflects on practice and student work to determine what went well and what changes could improve instruction and uses reflection to inform future instruction.
  17. Assesses students’ academic and social growth on a regular basis, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports as required, and communicates with parents as deemed necessary or when directed by the principal.
  18. Coordinates with counselors to place students appropriately based on their education background, credits previously obtained and language proficiency.
  19. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by the District Policy, Administrative Policy, and Pennsylvania law.
  20. Creates and maintains ELD program documentation in accordance with program requirements and PIMS collections.
  21. Seeks the support of district specialists when concern regarding student progress arises.
  22. Develops a code of conduct for the classroom which is consistent with established Administrative Policies.
  23. Provides clear behavior expectations for students and monitors student behavior throughout the class and school.
  24. Maintains translatable communications with LIEP families through established communication processes.
  25. Attends IEP, Section 504, or other related meetings necessary for student assessment and/or compliance with federal and/or state law.
  26. Participates in curriculum related and programmatic activities that are a part of the regular District program.
  27. Maintains an ongoing program of professional growth that satisfies District requirements.
  28. Completes screening process with all new students including family interviews and record reviews.
  29. Prepares for and administer WIDA ACCESS testing annually.
  30. Demonstrates professionalism and adheres to the Professional Code of Conduct.
  31. Follows established policies and procedures for reporting incidents.
  32. Other duties as assigned by the Building Principal and/or Administration.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Bachelor’s degree in teaching from an accredited institution or related field teaching.
  2. Pennsylvania Certification in teaching in the appropriate subject area or areas (English as a Second Language PK-12).
  3. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  4. Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  5. Must have the ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis.
  6. Knowledge and implementation of relevant technology.
  7. Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment.
  8. Must successfully complete and maintain compliance with all federal and state background and criminal record check requirements.
