Position/Job Description

PARAPROFESSIONAL, English As A Second Language I.A.

20 hours a week 181 days

Purpose: To assist teachers, students, and parents with translating the native language and English; serve as a liaison between the native language community and the school in helping each to understand the needs of students and the services of the school.

Reports To: Principal

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED
• Desire to continue career improvement, plus one of the following qualifications:
  • 3a. Completed two years of study at an institution of higher education (i.e., community college, college or university); OR
  • 3b. Obtained an associate’s or higher degree; OR
  • 3c. Met a rigorous standard of quality and be able to demonstrate, through passing the Kentucky Paraeducator Assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics.
• Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English and in the selected native language, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
• Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Essential Performance Responsibilities

• Translate orally between the native language and English for students, parents, and school staff.
• Translate written materials between the native language and English, including correspondence, forms, applications, notices, instructional materials, and other written materials of the school.
• Assist teachers in the planning, organization and implementing of instruction for students in the English Language Learners Program. Instruction is to be centered on the mastery of the core curriculum standards, the mastery of written and oral English, the mastery of the written and oral native language, and an understanding of both American and native language history, cultures, and traditions.
• Serve as a tutor for ELL students when requested.
• Serve as a liaison between parents, students, and the school, explaining school policies, procedures, services, programs, and the goals of the instructional program. Visit homes when requested to assist with the student’s transition between home and school.
• Assist the school staff with understanding of the culture and traditions of the native language, particularly when differences may enhance or diminish student learning.
• Communicate to the teacher any unusual situations or needs of students.
• Participate in appropriate professional development and attend any required meetings.
• Display ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school.
• Observe confidentiality of students and student records at all times.
• Use appropriate behavior management techniques to maintain a positive climate for learning.
• Collect Home Language Surveys and administer W-APT as required.
• Administer all required state testing; complete all related trainings.
• Develop and implement student’s Individual Program Service Plan.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal, Director of Special Education and /or Designee.

General Knowledge and Responsibilities

• Demonstrate the ability to use electronic equipment for word processing, data management, information retrieval, visual and audio presentations, and telecommunications.

Physical Requirements: Medium to Light Work

• Ability to lift at least 30 pounds
• Ability to exert in excess of 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects

Working Conditions: The worker is subject to both environmental conditions as activities occur both inside and outside.

Salary: Commensurate with the school district’s Classified Salary Schedule
