Job summary

HOURS OF WORK: 4/10's, 6:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Mon-Thurs

The ideal candidate would possess a broad knowledge of water treatment and transmission equipment such as pumps, valves, motors, actuators, motor control centers (MCC), protection relays as well as the preparation of multi-discipline engineering drawings utilizing AutoCAD; show some familiarity with standard practices for the potable water industry; demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate complex ideas to non-technical personnel, verbally or in writing; and have experience working with maintenance shop personnel.

With minimal supervision and under tight deadlines, the ideal candidate would also be able to work effectively on critical projects and systems within a team environment.

INTRODUCTION: Human Resources will screen applications and supplemental questionnaires. Candidates possessing the strongest skills and experience for this position will be forwarded to the hiring department for further evaluation and to determine who will be invited to the formal interview process. The candidate hired will be required to pass a drug screening, background check, and may be required to pass a job-related physical evaluation.

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision, performs technical and paraprofessional engineering duties in support of a variety of engineering design and construction, resource planning and operations analyses; and performs related duties as assigned.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Basic principles, practices and methods of engineering design and construction applicable to a large complex potable water utility; engineering mathematics, including algebra, geometry and trigonometry; fluid flow theory and design concepts; methods of hydraulic analysis and modeling; methods and procedures for development of engineering design and construction specifications; terminology, methods, practices, techniques and nomenclature of civil, mechanical and/or electrical engineering drafting; digital data handling and reporting methods and software; basic design and operations of the District's distribution and transmission systems; applicable District operating policies and departmental work procedures and quality standards; legal and regulatory requirements applicable to water works engineering.

Ability to:

Perform highly technical engineering analyses and calculations and reach sound accurate conclusions; read, understand and interpret engineering plans, drawings, specifications, maps and other technical materials applicable to the work; operate and use a variety of field test and data collection equipment to obtain highly accurate data; utilize GIS and other engineering/facilities databases to obtain information required for the work; precisely follow written and oral instructions; perform highly detailed work thoroughly, neatly and accurately; develop and maintain effective working relationships with District staff, consulting engineers, representatives of other agencies and others encountered in the course of work.

Training and Experience:

A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent, supplemented by college-level course work in engineering, drafting, engineering mathematics or related fields; and four years of progressively responsible sub-professional engineering or field survey experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

Some positions may require a Nevada driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s Vehicle Insurance Policy.

State of Nevada Division of Environmental Protection Distribution Operator in Training certificate within 12 months of hire.
