Located in the Division 11 Roadside Environmental Unit in Wilkes County, responsibilities include vegetation management, contract development and monitoring, and permitting. The unit ensures compliance with laws such as the 1973 Sedimentation Pollution Control Act, and manages activities like turf grass management, erosion control, herbicide applications, roadside mowing, landscape beautification, wildflower planting, storm water compliance, and vegetation removal.
Main duties involve inspecting contract grass mowing, slope mowing, litter removal, roadside maintenance, and federally funded landscape projects. The role also supports winter weather operations and maintenance at Rest Areas. Ensuring work safety and compliance on NCDOT Right-of-Way is essential. The position includes coordinating permits and fees, interpreting policies, and inspecting contracted work.
You do not need a degree to qualify; applicants with at least two years of related experience are encouraged to apply.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Experience in vegetation management, contract inspection, record keeping, reading highway/landscape plans, and proficiency in MS Word and Excel. Ability to conduct routine inspections, understand regulations, operate inspection equipment, maintain records, communicate effectively, and operate a vehicle. Night and weekend work, snow and ice operations, and emergency response may be required. Safety footwear is mandatory.
Minimum Education and Experience: An associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Consideration for trainees without full qualifications is possible, with salary adjustments upon qualification.
