This position is located in the Division 11 Roadside Environmental Unit in Wilkes County which is responsible for vegetation management, development and monitoring of contracts, and permitting to the private sector. This Unit is also responsible for ensuring all work adheres to the 1973 Sedimentation Pollution Control Act, the NC Department of Agriculture Pesticide Division’s regulations, OSHA and all other Federal, State or Local laws and ordinances governing the work involved, installation and maintenance of Storm water BMP’s. The unit provides a comprehensive vegetation management program consisting of turf grass management, erosion control, seeding and mulching, herbicide and pesticide applications, roadside mowing, long arm slope mowing, landscape beautification plantings and maintenance, wildflower establishment, rest area operations and maintenance, storm water compliance program and selective vegetation removal permitting. Main responsibilities for this position include inspection of contract grass mowing, long arm slope mowing, littler removal, and other roadside maintenance operations throughout the various counties within the division. This position is also responsible for federally funded contract landscape enhancement projects. Position will assist with winter weather operations in the division. Maintenance operations at Rest Areas may be required. This position is responsible for ensuring all work performed on NCDOT Right-of-Way is performed according to standard procedures in a safe manner. Position is responsible for inspection of landscape enhancement projects, mowing contracts, and Plant Bed Maintenance contracts. Position also coordinates Selective Vegetation Removal program with outdoor advertising companies, business owners and contractors. This includes permit and fee processing, policy interpretation and inspection of contracted work. This position is responsible for ensuring all work performed on NCDOT Right of Way is performed according to standard procedures in a safe manner.

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
- Experience in vegetation management such as grass mowing, guardrail trimming, tree removal and plant bed maintenance.
- Experience in contract inspection in accordance with NCDOT Standards.
- Experience in record keeping in accordance with NCDOT Standards.
- Experience reading highway and/or landscape construction plans.
- Experience using MS Word and Excel
Additional Expectations:
Must be able to conduct routine inspections for compliance with contract agreements, standards/codes and specifications. Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in inspection of various contracts. General knowledge of state and/or federal rules and regulations to determine compliance. General knowledge and skill in the use of equipment and software used for inspection. Ability to maintain standard records both physically and electronically. Ability to effectively use verbal and nonverbal skills to express routing or simple technical and/or program concepts and related facts in a clear, concise, organized manner. Night and weekend work assignments are possible. Snow and ice operations and emergency response at rest area facilities are required. May be required to verbally communicate with the general public. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Ability to legally operate a vehicle. Safety toes shoes required.

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
