Job summary

City of San José, Department of Transportation, seeks Engineering Technician I/II to support infrastructure maintenance and project reviews. Responsibilities include field investigations, CAD/GIS plan reviews, and data reporting.

The role requires strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills, plus a California driver’s license. Under general supervision, you will assist engineers, prepare materials for public meetings, and maintain databases for reporting and compliance.

Qualifications

• Two (2) years of increasingly responsible sub-professional engineering work performing materials sampling and testing, reviewing plans and specifications, construction or infrastructure inspections, traffic engineering, or field survey work.
• Substitution: two academic years or 60 semester units in engineering tech may substitute for experience.
• Possession of a valid State of California driver's license may be required.
• The ideal candidate will demonstrate professional knowledge, communication, teamwork, and reliability.

Responsibilities

• Conduct field investigations and prepare summaries with guidance from engineers.
• Review and modify capital improvement plans using CAD or GIS tools.
• Prepare materials for public meetings and respond to resident inquiries.
• Manage databases; support data entry and reporting for public records requests.
• Demonstrate strong analytical, written, and oral communication skills.
• Collaborate effectively in a team and adapt to various roles.
