This posting is intended to fill a total of (2) two Engineering Technician I positions: 60018474, and 60018475. You only need to apply once to be considered for both positions
This position is based in the Columbus County Whiteville Resident’s Office. This is an Engineering Technician I position that supports higher level technicians and engineers in functional areas such as construction inspection, surveying, materials sampling, testing, and construction traffic control. Work functions may include entering specific project information into Sharepoint/Shareplus. Position duties include the performance of a wide variety of standardized and non-standardized tests and assignments in compiling, analyzing, computing, editing, and processing field data. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned. The candidate may have to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as necessary. Possess knowledge and understanding of general concepts and practices used in highway construction and design. Ability to conduct routine inspections for compliance with contract agreements, standard/codes, and specifications. Perform entry level materials sampling, testing and inspection. Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, management, and general public. Knowledge of mathematics (Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry). Ability to read and interpret construction plans, contract provisions, specifications, and inspection procedures. Accurately maintain daily records of work accomplished. Apply safety philosophy and program to all operations.

- Knowledge of standards and specifications and plan reading experience.
- Experience maintaining standard daily records and reports.
- Knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, iPad, and software.
- Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspection, and /or construction surveying.
Additional Expectations
Promote safe working environment. Ability to withstand extreme weather and terrain conditions while performing duties. Ability to work in close proximity of high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment The candidate needs to be proficient in record keeping. The employee must be able to obtain and maintain certifications needed to perform material sampling and testing related to this position. The selected candidate will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes required.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
If there are no qualified candidates remaining in the applicant pool who meet the minimum Education and Experience or Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position, the agency may consider for this position a trainee who does not meet the minimum requirements. Salary for a trainee may be set at a lower level than the classification salary range and recruitment range that is listed in the posting with the salary being adjusted up accordingly when the trainee has obtained the necessary additional education and experience to fully meet the minimum qualifications as outlined in the classification specification.
