Job summary

Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development is seeking an Engineering Technician 5 to coordinate traffic data collection and review traffic studies in Baton Rouge. You will lead data collection, perform analyses, and develop actionable recommendations for safety improvements and efficiency.

The role requires CADD proficiency, the ability to manage multiple assignments, and collaboration with engineers, planners, and district staff.

Qualifications

  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED plus three years of sub-professional engineering experience; OR
  • Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance plus three years of sub-professional engineering experience; OR
  • Eighteen semester hours in one of the following specialized fields: architecture, cartography, construction management, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, engineering technology, industrial technology, landscape architecture, math, or physics.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates traffic data collection activities with District personnel and other appropriate parties.
  • Leads traffic data collection and analysis activities, including manual peak-hour turning movement counts, 24-hour machine volume counts, speed studies, intersection diagrams, collision diagrams, and other related traffic studies.
  • Compiles, analyzes, and presents traffic data in a usable format and develops recommendations for corrective action.
  • Uses Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) software to develop traffic control plans, traffic signal inventories, and other traffic-related designs.
  • Reviews traffic engineering studies, plans, and specifications, including speed studies, pedestrian crosswalk studies, traffic signal plans, traffic equipment specifications, and traffic sign plans.
  • Assists with developing scopes for traffic engineering data collection services for Traffic Engineering, Project Management, Planning, Environmental, and other DOTD sections.
  • Communicates and coordinates with consultants, plan development engineers, planners, project managers, District Traffic Operations Engineers, and other stakeholders regarding traffic engineering studies and data collection activities.
  • Assists with developing and updating traffic engineering policies, procedures, standards, and specifications.
  • Attends public meetings and provides technical support to project teams, as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including emergency or disaster support activities.

Engineering Technician 5 (Traffic Engineering Data Collection)

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is seeking a motivated and dependable Engineering Technician 5 to join the Headquarters Traffic Engineering Section in Baton Rouge. This position coordinates advanced traffic data collection activities and reviews traffic engineering studies, plans, and specifications to improve the safety and efficiency of Louisiana’s transportation network. Typical assignments include Complete Streets and Vulnerable Road User (VRU) studies, speed-setting studies, traffic signal design and optimization, and plan reviews.

The ideal candidate is a technically skilled, analytical, and detail-oriented self-starter who can coordinate multiple assignments independently and quickly learn new concepts, technologies, and techniques. Applicants with experience in traffic data collection and analysis, traffic studies, CADD, technical plan review, or applying traffic engineering standards and manuals are encouraged to apply.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: This position may be filled by probational appointment, promotion, or detail to special duty in accordance with applicable State Civil Service rules.

Compensation: This position receives premium pay of $2.00 per hour for all hours worked.

Additional compensation may be considered for applicants who possess extraordinary job-related qualifications or credentials in accordance with State Civil Service Rule 6.5(g) and DOTD policy. Any additional compensation is subject to approval, verification, and applicable pay limitations.
