Job Description

Under general supervision, to perform sub-professional engineering duties with responsibility for coordinating or conducting work on phases of minor to moderately complex engineering projects including design and administration; or for performing and/or supervising other sub-professional personnel performing routine or minor engineering project activities on one or more phases of a complex engineering project. Engineering Technicians may serve in various assignments such as drafting, material testing, drainage studies, inspection, or assisting project engineers with the planning, design, and construction of streets, sewers, and other municipal projects. They may also supervise other sub-professional or semi-skilled employees involved in engineering projects.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school graduation including or supplemented by courses in drafting and mathematics, with considerable experience in sub-professional engineering work; or an equivalent combination of education and training, where each year of education in an engineering-related field substitutes for two years of experience.
  • Preferred: Certification as an Engineering Technician (ET) or possession of a current Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate.
  • Must pass a post-employment physical and drug screening.
  • Valid Iowa Driver's License or equivalent mobility is required.
Responsibilities
  • Design and assist in designing public construction projects.
  • Draft and prepare construction plans and specifications for sewer, paving, bridges, and other structures; estimate project quantities.
  • Review building site plans.
  • Coordinate inspections of construction activities and analyze drainage issues.
  • Calculate distances, angles, and grades; compute quantities.
  • Prepare reports, specifications, and test construction materials for compliance.
  • Supervise other personnel involved in engineering projects.
  • Prepare legal descriptions, assessment schedules, and enforce contract specifications.
  • Research records and respond to citizen and employee inquiries, providing project and record information.
  • Perform related duties as required.
