Job summary

The City of Apache Junction Economic Development seeks an Engineering Inspector support role within the city’s engineering division. You will assist with planning, design, and construction administration for CIP projects; review plans; and coordinate public improvements for development.

You will read project documents, prepare reports, assist with AZPDES permitting, GIS data tasks, and provide customer service to staff and the public.

Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Applied Sciences and two years of municipal or private sector engineering inspection experience.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience considered.

Responsibilities

  • Review Civil Improvement Plans and plats for commercial, industrial and residential sites.
  • Coordinate public improvements for development; survey minor land divisions and lot adjustments.

Description

(Anticipated Hiring Range: $26.82 - $28.18/hour) Positions assigned to this class are responsible for providing support to engineering tasks. Serves as a resource for city staff and contractors/developers. Performs related work as required by the engineering division and/or department director. May be assigned in Public Works and/or Development Services.

Essential Duties
  • Assist with planning, design, construction administration for capital improvement projects (CIP). Assist with the review of Civil Improvement Plans and Preliminary and Final Plats for commercial, industrial and residential projects.
  • Assist with coordination of public improvements for private and commercial development; survey maps for minor land division/land split, lot combination and lot line adjustment.
  • Right of Way acquisition/abandonment; FPE extinguishment.
  • Enforce City ordinances, policies, procedures, and guidelines associated with on-site and off-site improvements.
  • Assists with administering Arizona Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (AZPDES) permitting program (storm water quality).
  • Read and review project construction documents and structural specifications to determine dimensions of structure or system and material requirements. Review technical engineering reports.
  • Prepare reports and document project activities and data, scan field division files, plans and records.
  • Customer service, assisting customers and city staff in office (counter) or phone.
  • Depending on assignment may assist with the implementation and plan review of the Arizona Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (AZPDES)/Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permitting program and the preparation of reports for the construction storm water inspection.
  • May assist with collecting geographic information systems (GIS) Data.
  • May issue and inspect offsite encroachment permits, preparation and calculations of grading and excavation permits.
  • May participate with technical committees and planning groups.
  • May assist with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Flood Plain Administration.
  • May analyze proposed site factors and design maps, graphs, tracings and diagrams to illustrate findings.
  • Support the City’s policies, goals and objectives and work with management and other staff to ethically achieve such goals and objectives; ensure compliance with safety procedures.
Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

Graduation from a college or university accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education or Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) with an Associates Degree in Applied Sciences, and two (2) years paid fulltime experience in a municipal or private sector office as an engineering inspector, performing construction or development projects including plan preparation and/or plan review, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • City Engineering Standards; Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices; GIS software; Maricopa Association of Governments standards and specifications (MAG).
  • Maricopa County Drainage Design Manual for Hydrology, Hydraulics and Erosion Control.

Skills

  • Reading construction related documents such as maps, plans, cost estimates and specifications.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with contractors, coworkers and other individuals in contact during the course of work.
  • Communicating clearly and concisely; following instructions; working with little or no direct supervision.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing standard software such as Microsoft Office and specialized software (AutoCAD), permit and plan review software and standard office equipment.
Pre-employment Requirements

Candidates who are selected for appointment may be fingerprinted, if 18 or older; successfully complete a background investigation, employment verification and may be subject to a drug/alcohol test, medical, polygraph and/or psychological evaluation. Candidates who are appointed will be required to possess a valid driver’s license to operate a vehicle in Arizona.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Field work is performed in an outdoor environment, with various outdoor temperatures. Some work is performed in a standard office environment. May require frequent sitting and continuous operation of a personal computer. May be required to perform a full range of motion with lifting and/or carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds. Will require operation of a vehicle.
