Job summary

GrayMatter seeks an Engineering Team Lead to supervise Controls Systems Engineers, Technicians, and Specialists while hands-on delivering Building Automation Services (BAS) projects. This player/coach role combines leadership with advanced controls expertise to ensure project success and client satisfaction.

You will lead commissioning, PLC programming, and SCADA integration, mentor staff, and drive best practices across projects. Expect significant client interaction and field work across sites.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or related field; equivalent combos may be considered.
  • 5-8+ years in industrial automation or controls engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring, and managing technical teams.
  • Strong experience with PLC programming, SCADA systems, industrial automation, and application programming.
  • Advanced understanding of controls systems, SCADA, PLCs, and building/power management systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Working knowledge of networking and TCP/IP communications.
  • Excellent communication, customer service, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% to client sites.
  • Technical certifications and BAS experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, coach, and develop a team of Controls Systems Engineers, Technicians, and Specialists.
  • Conduct performance reviews and support career growth for team members.
  • Execute BAS projects within scope, schedule, budget, and quality.
  • Deliver controls engineering, commissioning, PLC programming, and SCADA integration services.
  • Perform onsite troubleshooting, testing, commissioning, and technical support.
  • Partner with project management, engineering, commissioning, and commercial teams for project success.
  • Drive client satisfaction and maintain strong relationships throughout projects.
  • Support resource planning, utilization, and scheduling for team members.
  • Assist with developing controls standards, best practices, and processes.
  • Participate in pre-sales activities including project scoping, BOM development, and proposal support.
  • Assist with recruiting, hiring, and onboarding as needed.

We are seeking an Engineering Team Lead to Provide leadership, coaching, and technical oversight for a team of Controls Systems Engineers, Technicians, and Specialists while also serving as a hands-on contributor to Building Automation Services (BAS) projects. This player/coach role combines people leadership with advanced controls engineering expertise to ensure successful project delivery, client satisfaction, and team development.

General Job Duties
  • Lead, mentor, coach, and develop a team of Controls Systems Engineers, Technicians, and Specialists.
  • Conduct performance reviews, establish development goals, and support career growth for assigned team members.
  • Execute BAS projects while maintaining scope, schedule, budget, and quality expectations.
  • Deliver controls engineering, commissioning, PLC programming, and SCADA integration services.
  • Perform onsite troubleshooting, testing, commissioning, and technical support activities.
  • Partner with project management, engineering, commissioning, and commercial teams to ensure successful project execution.
  • Drive client satisfaction and maintain strong customer relationships throughout project lifecycles.
  • Support resource planning, utilization management, and scheduling for assigned team members.
  • Assist with the development of controls standards, best practices, and team processes.
  • Participate in pre-sales activities including project scoping, bill of materials development, and proposal support.
  • Support recruiting, hiring, and onboarding activities as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience Needed
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related field; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • 5-8+ years of experience in industrial automation, controls engineering, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring, and managing technical teams.
  • Strong experience with PLC programming, SCADA systems, industrial automation, and application programming.
  • Advanced understanding of controls systems, SCADA, PLCs, and building or power management systems.
