Job summary

GrayMatter in Indianapolis, IN seeks an Engineering Team Lead for Building Automation to provide leadership, coaching, and technical oversight for a team of Controls Systems Engineers, Technicians, and Specialists while contributing as a hands-on BAS project engineer.

Responsibilities include PLC programming, SCADA integration, onsite troubleshooting, and strong client relationship management, with up to 50% travel.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• 5-8+ years in industrial automation/controls engineering.
• Experience leading and mentoring technical teams.
• Strong PLC programming, SCADA, and industrial automation experience.
• Advanced understanding of controls, SCADA, PLCs, and BAS/power systems.
• Strong troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Working knowledge of networking and TCP/IP communications.
• Excellent communication and leadership skills.
• Willingness to travel up to 50% to support client sites.
• Certifications and BAS industry experience preferred.

We are seeking an Engineering Team Lead to Provide leadership, coaching, and technical oversight for a team of Controls Systems Engineers, Technicians, and Specialists while also serving as a hands‑on contributor to Building Automation Services (BAS) projects. This player/coach role combines people leadership with advanced controls engineering expertise to ensure successful project delivery, client satisfaction, and team development.

General Job Duties

• Lead, mentor, coach, and develop a team of Controls Systems Engineers, Technicians, and Specialists.
• Conduct performance reviews, establish development goals, and support career growth for assigned team members.
• Execute BAS projects while maintaining scope, schedule, budget, and quality expectations.
• Deliver controls engineering, commissioning, PLC programming, and SCADA integration services.
• Perform onsite troubleshooting, testing, commissioning, and technical support activities.
• Partner with project management, engineering, commissioning, and commercial teams to ensure successful project execution.
• Drive client satisfaction and maintain strong customer relationships throughout project lifecycles.
• Support resource planning, utilization management, and scheduling for assigned team members.
• Assist with the development of controls standards, best practices, and team processes.
• Participate in pre‑sales activities including project scoping, bill of materials development, and proposal support.
• Support recruiting, hiring, and onboarding activities as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Needed

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related field; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
• 5-8+ years of experience in industrial automation, controls engineering, or related fields.
• Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring, and managing technical teams.
• Strong experience with PLC programming, SCADA systems, industrial automation, and application programming.
• Advanced understanding of controls systems, SCADA, PLCs, and building or power management systems.
• Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
• Working knowledge of networking and TCP/IP communications.
• Excellent communication, customer service, and leadership skills.
• Ability to travel up to 50% to support client sites.
• Technical certifications and prior BAS industry experience are preferred.
