Job summary

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking an Engineering Supervisor I (NS) to provide technical and administrative support to the Division Maintenance staff. The role oversees diverse maintenance projects, manages the Division Resurfacing and Preservation program, and ensures policy consistency across the division.

Description of Work

The primary purpose of this position is to provide technical and administrative support to the Division Maintenance staff. This includes overseeing all Maintenance projects such as Secondary Road Construction, Safety, High Impact/Low Cost, Disaster, and Contingency projects, as well as managing the Division Resurfacing and Preservation program. The position supports fiscal responsibilities through budgeting, tracking expenditures, generating and analyzing reports, and coaching peers and maintenance supervisors on effective budget management strategies. It also provides support in developing new contracts for various maintenance functions and administering ID/IQ contracts across the Division. Additionally, the position is responsible for troubleshooting issues within maintenance areas and ensuring consistency in the application of policies and procedures throughout the Division.

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate a motor vehicle.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

• Knowledge in roadway maintenance, preservation, rehabilitations, design and construction of roadway facilities including pavements, drainage, safety systems, and vegetation
• Experience in tracking cost expenditures in various account systems on multiple large projects
• Experience in conduction meetings with employees, citizens and public officials to conduction investigations and resolve various issues
• Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining engineering concepts to various customer groups
• Experience supervising the work of others

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification: May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
