Job summary

United Grid Solutions in Marietta, GA is seeking an experienced Senior Substation Design Engineer to lead engineering efforts for utility substation and transmission line projects, including layouts, grounding, and protection coordination.

The role requires 8+ years in engineering, ABET/EAC accredited degree, and a PE license; you will mentor junior staff, review designs, prepare reports, visit sites, and ensure adherence to customer standards.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience as a practicing engineer.
• ABET/EAC accredited engineering degree or equivalent evaluation by NCEES.
• Licensed Professional Engineer (PE)

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of engineers and designers in a lead engineer capacity.
• Oversee work of junior staff and mentor designers/drafters.
• Collaborate with other design disciplines, construction, consultants, and clients.
• Visit sites to advise on physical engineering issues and modify designs during construction.
• Develop and implement QA/QC processes for substation designs.
• Prepare and present engineering reports and specifications.

Job description

• o include equipment arrangements, lightning protection, grounding, lighting, equipment specifics, and substation construction as it applies to utility substation and transmission line equipment facilities
• Understanding of basic needs of protection and control and civil/structural discipline as they apply to utility substation and transmission lines
• Create and improve processes for substation physical design project scopes, estimates, budgets, and schedules for substation projects
• Create QA/QC checklists to improve physical designs for utility stations through 500kV, including substation arrangements, sections, and elevations, foundation and grading plans, lighting plans and details, fence plans and details, grounding plans and details, rigid bus designs, strain bus designs, below grade designs to include duct banks and cable trenches, bus and equipment support structures, as well as a fundamental understating of circuit arrangements into and out of a substation
• Subject Matter Expert in the installation requirements of high voltage transformers, group operated disconnect switches, breakers, PTs, CCVTs, line turners, surge arresters, and other equipment within the substation
• Proficient in creating grounding studies and designs
• Perform and produce reports for bus calculations, lightning protection calculations, and use software for ground grid designs
• Ability to create written specifications and implement them on engineering drawings
• Ability to lead a team of engineers and designers in a lead engineer capacity
• Oversee the work of junior staff and mentor designers/drafters.
• Industry expert in checking designs for accuracy, appearance, and adherence to customer standards
• Collaborate, communicate, and liaise effectively with other design disciplines, colleagues, construction contractors, consultants, materials suppliers, and clients
• Visit sites, advise on physical engineering issues, and modify design to solve issues during construction

Requirements

• 8+ years’ experience as a practicing engineer
• Bachelor’s degree from an EAC/ABET accredited Engineering Program OR an approved evaluation of non-ABET credentials by NCEES OR graduation from a Master’s or Doctoral Program in Engineering from an institution with EAC/ABET accredited Undergraduate Engineering Programs
• Licensed Professional Engineer
