Infinitesima is seeking an Engineering Manager, Scientific Software to lead the Data Analysis team responsible for turning raw AFM scan data into robust 3D measurements. You will shape software strategy, manage delivery in a cross-functional setting, and maintain hands-on technical leadership in an on-premises, offline environment.
The role emphasizes strong Python development, image processing expertise and Agile/Lean practices, with hybrid working from Abingdon.
(Senior Data Analyst Manager)
Do you enjoy leading engineers who turn raw scientific data into software the rest of the business can rely on?
We’re looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead our Data Analysis team - so named for what the product delivers to customers, though the team itself is a software and algorithm engineering team - building the applications that turn raw atomic force microscope (AFM) scan data into the 3D measurements our customers depend on. This is a pivotal role combining hands-on technical leadership with people management - shaping our software strategy and driving delivery across a growing, cross-functional organisation. Our software runs inside semiconductor fabs and processes real 3D height-profile data captured at atomic scale, so this role suits someone who enjoys working at the forefront of technology on complex problems, scientific data, and software that must be robust, reliable, and trusted by customers.
You’ll lead the team that builds our image-analysis application: consolidating multiple data streams from the microscope, flattening and correcting scan images, recognising scanned features and measuring their height, and running statistical analysis across large sets of measurements. Because the software runs inside a fab with no internet access, the team owns the full picture - there’s no cloud service to lean on, so the algorithms, the application, and the visualisation all must hold up entirely on their own.
A note about AI: we’re adopting agentic development with Claude, but our engineers retain full ownership and accountability of the code they ship - whether they wrote it or generated it. AI is a tool that amplifies engineering expertise, not a substitute for it.
To succeed as an Engineering Manager, Scientific Software, we do need you to bring:
The company is a privately owned company founded in 2001, as a spin-out of the University of Bristol, by CTO Professor Andrew Humphris. Our dynamic team of scientists and engineers is focussed on enabling the next generation of semiconductor devices through delivery of innovative products to customers around the world. Our strength lies in the varied perspectives that come from different cultures, experiences, and identities. We believe that true innovation is fuelled by collaboration, locally and globally. We strive to foster an environment where everyone can contribute meaningfully and thrive. If you require adjustments to take part in the recruitment process, please let us know, we’ll do our best to support you.
We use AI only to transcribe our interviews so we can focus fully on you instead of scribbling notes. The AI doesnottake part in any decision making at any stage. All hiring decisions are made by real humans based on the conversation we have with you.
We offer flexible, hybrid working from day one, where possible. During your first three months with us, we ask for 4 days per week on site here at Abingdon, with 1 day remote. After probation, this typically settles to around a 3:2 split between office and remote working.
