Job summary

Markel Corporation is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the full-stack development teams behind our Wholesale and Specialty policy administration platform. This cloud-hosted Microsoft stack application supports quoting, issuing, and servicing commercial insurance policies.

You will mentor engineers, drive delivery, and coordinate with product owners while maintaining robust CI/CD and production support practices. This role expects cross-team leadership and a strong engineering mindset.

Qualifications

• 8 to 10 years of software development, infrastructure, or project delivery experience, including full stack development.
• Hands-on experience with the Microsoft technology stack: C#/.NET, ASP.NET, REST APIs, SQL Server.
• Experience delivering and operating applications in Microsoft Azure (App Services, Azure SQL, Functions, storage, messaging).
• Experience with CI/CD practices and tooling, preferably Azure DevOps and/or GitHub, including automated build, test, and release pipelines.
• Experience with modern front-end development (Angular, React, or Blazor).
• Experience with agile software development methodologies and multiple-team leadership.
• Insurance or financial services experience is a plus.
• Practical experience applying AI-assisted development tooling in software engineering.

Responsibilities

• Contributes to strategic, operational, and divisional goals as part of the management team.
• Tracks team delivery, provides updates to management, and flags deviations.
• Conducts performance appraisals and manages employee development and progression.
• Defines team standards, secures necessary resources, and ensures QA practices.
• Leads design, build, and delivery of full-stack components on the Microsoft stack.
• Owns CI/CD, automated testing, and production support practices.
• Collaborates with product owners to translate business needs into software solutions.
• Oversees cross-team integration and production support escalation; may require late hours.
