Job summary

Scale AI's Public Sector engineering team is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead the Frontier AI Infrastructure group in Washington, DC. This 50/50 role blends hands-on coding with people leadership, guiding a small team to deliver secure, cloud-native infrastructure for government contracts and mission-driven initiatives.

You will hire, coach, and shape priorities, run sprint planning and incidents, and partner with Product to meet customer requirements. DC office 3–4 days/week is required.

Qualifications

• At least 1-2+ years of direct people management experience leading a team of software engineers.
• At least an active Secret clearance, with ability to up-level to TS/SCI with CI Poly.
• Willingness to remain hands-on in the code.

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and grow a team of engineers—own hiring, onboarding, performance, and career development.
• Set technical direction and quarterly priorities for the inference layer, and ensure delivery on contracts.
• Run sprint planning, on-call rotation, incident reviews, and postmortems.
• Translate customer and mission requirements into roadmap in collaboration with Product.
• Represent the team in customer engagements and vendor escalations, including with government stakeholders.
• Design and implement secure, scalable backend systems for Public Sector customers using Scale's cloud-native infrastructure.
• Own services and systems, define long-term health goals, and improve surrounding components.
• Stay involved in code by reviewing PRs, debugging production issues, and doing hands-on work.
