Job summary

The Associated Press seeks an Engineering Manager for the Consumer Platform & Applications group in New York. You will lead a distributed team delivering consumer-facing web and mobile experiences, extending the CMS and backend services, and owning GraphQL APIs.

This hands-on leadership role emphasizes performance, reliability, and collaboration across Product, Editorial, QA, Security, and Revenue. You will mentor engineers, shape architecture, and drive delivery with a product-minded focus,

Qualifications

• 6+ years building and operating consumer-facing web and mobile applications and backend systems, with leadership experience.
• Player-coach experience, staying technically close enough to review, prototype, and unblock while leading delivery.
• Product-minded engineering with design judgment balancing speed, scalability and maintainability.
• Hands-on experience with AI development tools and agentic workflows.
• Strong TypeScript and React skills with Next.js or equivalent; depth in at least one server-side language (TypeScript/Node, Go, Python, Java or Kotlin).
• Familiarity with native iOS and Android release processes.
• Experience designing and evolving GraphQL APIs across multiple client surfaces.
• Fluent in headless content modeling and editorial workflows mapping to downstream APIs.
• Strong CI/CD experience with automated pipelines, feature flags, and reliable rollbacks.
• Experience diagnosing performance issues in high-traffic ad-supported environments with observability.
• Experience managing distributed teams and external vendors across time zones.
• Knowledge of accessibility WCAG 2.1 AA, security and privacy fundamentals, SEO, and analytics.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s in computer science or related field (or equivalent experience).

Responsibilities

• Manage and mentor a distributed team of engineers and vendor partners across time zones.
• Remain hands-on with code review, architectural decisions, prototyping, and removing blockers.
• Introduce AI-assisted development and agentic workflows in delivery and review processes.
• Lead development of headless web apps with React/Next.js and native iOS/Android apps serving millions daily.
• Extend the AP News CMS and backend services powering editorial workflows, publishing and products.
• Own GraphQL APIs and data contracts with backward-compatible changes across clients.
• Drive performance across the stack from client Core Web Vitals to backend latency and caching.
• Coordinate web and app releases and partner with Operations Center on incident response.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, Editorial, QA, Security and Revenue to turn roadmaps into executable plans.
• Maintain focus on outcomes and guide the team toward high-impact work.
• Coach engineers through 1:1s and career discussions to raise the technical bar.
